6DJ8 or 6922

Hi All, I just bought the Cayin Audio CDT-15A - Vaccum Tube CD Player and it runs the 6922 tubes for output. It currently has stock tubes which even though I don't know the brand (the player will be here next Wednesday) I have read that they are nothing special.

I've also seen in many places on the intraweb that the 6922 and 6DJ8 are interchangable. Is that true?

So what brands/models of 6922 should I try in this unit???

The 6922 is the same tube as the 6DJ8, and will work wherever a 6DJ8 is needed. It has premium features such as low noise, low microphonics, and usually a longer lifespan.

Bugle Boy 6DJ8s are good, as are Amperex globes Gold pin PC 6922 Amperexs are big bucks and highly regarded too. I think I have a couple around here you could check out.

Sounds great Andy. I've never spent more than 70 bucks on a CD player (acturally DVD player). This is my first forey into big bucks CD players. This one also has solid state out and all the chips on in sockets so I can swap those as well, but I will start with the tubes as I've read the SS can sound a bit harsh.....we'll see.

6922,6N2, 6DJ8, 7208 and 7308 are all interchangeable. The 7308 Amperex White labels would probably work really well in your application.

I thought the 6922 could handle more current or something. I know the designer of my Eros phono stage said that he did not recommend using a 6DJ8 in place of the 6922, something about start-up in-rush if I remember correctly

Edit: From what I remember, and what it's worth, you can put a 6922 anywhere a 6DJ8 is called for. But to sub the other way when an amp is designed around a 6922 you need to check first. As noted above and in my link, you are usually going to be all right but there may be some risk to using the 6DJ8.

ECC88 and E188CC also iirc.......I have a few variants of these that I'll check when I get home if they have not already been posted

6N1P Russian is a good tube as well. I prefer them to the 6922's and 6DJ8's in my amp. I have the Russian ones that have a rocket on them.

CV2492 and CV2493 also.

The Mullard CV2493 is the best variant I have ever heard.

Brent Jesse has a good list of options / subs

I like the Siemens with a 'A4' internal stamp personally

One of my amps uses the 6n1p as a driver. The ones with the "rocket" are my faves too.

To others here, words of caution on the 6n1p: In most cases it IS NOT interchangeable with the 6922 series of tubes. Make real sure your unit can use it before you find out the hard way.

On the 6922's, for NOS I like the Amperex and Siemens. For new, the Genalex Gold Lion is at the top. The JJ's are real cheap and excellent sounding but I have had a few reliability problems with them but for around 12 bucks, buy an extra one or two.
