6DJ8 Phono Amp Diagram

Got some pics of this.

Think there would be any benefit to changing the c3 cap from an Orange Drop to something else? I'm considering that, but the .1uf orange drops are fairly big and they are providing support to a lot of other stuff. Might try to bypass with some russian teflons I have.

I also read about people using LED's on the cathodes that I might give a try.

Looking Good!... I can see that you had as much Fun with those Caps as I had.. It gets a little Tight in there...After you get it all Set Up, you can try some Tube Rolling...The Russian 6N23P's work Great, and are Very Reasonable.
 
I've looked over this thread, and this seems like a pretty straight forward build, does any one have a parts list for this build? Would this be a good choice for a first build of a phono tube amp? I have a MM cart, but I'm a bit apprehensive about tubes.
 
I'm pondering building a guitar amp with a 6DJ8 stage in it. The tubes are so often noisy and microphonic that I don't think I can use them in the first gain stage, but my experience with the way they sound in hi-fi applications has me really curious about guitar use. Actually, the TJ Full Music 12AX7 from Grant Fidelity gave my guitar amps the same kind of sound that 6DJ8s gave my hi-fi rig, though I'm sure there was more to it than just the tube type when I upgraded my hi-fi preamp.
 
Hey Jrodkrip and JonL..This is a great little project, and if you use the RS transformer Trick and Russian 6N23P's...You can do it for $100..But, no mater what you do...You will have a bit of Heater Hum, and of course..Tube Hum..I managed to get 10 Russian Tubes for $25 and Rolled then till I got it Pretty Quiet..Then, I got a 6V DC PS and ran it thru about 8000uf of Caps to Heat the Filaments..I just Plug it in and let the Tubes Glow, then I turn on the B+....It will Never be Silent...But, if you have it Up Enough to Hear the Tubes...When you drop the Needle, the Groove will be Louder, and all you will Hear is Wonderful Vinyl..I'm also running this thru a third 6N23P and two Volume Pots so as to get as much Gain as I need, and I'm able to Balance it to what ever the Tubes put out..

i dont know much about tubes, but if your complaining about noise you might wanna get diffrent RCA cables. I replaced mine (standard dual CS5000) with something better. Its still all solid state with me, but changing the cables reduced the noise by a huge amount.

If you weren't using the DC PSU to heat the fillaments, what would be a good alternative? I dont see in your power schematic anywhere 6V is coming out of the current RS transformers?

Interesting phono section! I've been waiting for the Pearl 2 schematic to be released, but it just isnt happening. This could definately be a quick and easy build.....:scratch2:

do you spike into the 6.3V from the output of the first transformer for the power to the filaments if you dont want to run an external dc block?
 
I've just swapped out the two 6N23P's in the Phono Stage for two 6H2P-EB's with a 6DJ8 on the Output. It sounds just as good, but the 6H2P's are way more quiet then the 6N23P's.. They're still Burning-In, but they sure have enough Bass and plenty of Punch on 125v. The 6H2P's are Russian 6v 12AX7's..

Pin compatible with 6DJ8? I might try them in my Audible Illusions. I love the way this preamps sounds, but it's tough finding tubes that start out quiet and stay quiet.

I'm glad this thread got resuscitated (and thank heavens for spell check!) I've been contemplating building a phono stage so I can add a second table to my rig without having to use a selector switch in the phono-level cables. I may build this and feed it into a line level input. What's the overall gain with just the two halves of a single 6DJ8?
 
I can't tell you the numbers, but this will work with just the two tubes. Adding the last 6DJ8 gives it all the Punch you will want...But, I use two Volume Pots. to set the Input and Balance to the 6DJ8...

Sled, thanks for posting this. I have been looking for a simple phono preamp build.

What caases heater hum? Can it be filtered out somehow?

Paralled 6dj8's? What would that schematic look like?

OK, for the weekend Update..It sounds to me that running 2 6H2P's in the Phono Stage with a 6DJ8 as Output gives it a bit more Bass,..Or less Mids..Using only one in the first Socket, then a 6N23P in the Second powering a 6DJ8 Output seems to Sound the Best...
