6EU7 substitute?

No direct plug-n-play sub. You can use a 12AX7 but you'll have to rewire the socket because pinouts are different.

thats what i would think. i have quite a few of those in my stash and just looked up the price at tubedepot :jawdrop:

anyone know a substitute for the 6EU7?

The 6EU7 is a high mu dual triode similar to a 12AX7 in performance. There is no direct substitute. But, if you are good at rewiring things, you could modify the stage using the 6EU7 to use a 12AX7. But, you can buy NOS 6EU7's for a little over $20.00. They are available at several tube sellers and the price is not much more then current production 12AX7's. You could try www.vacuumtubes.net. They have NOS 6EU7's.

arn't the heater voltages different?

Yes and no. The 12AX7 has a heater centertap. It can be wired up in series for 12V or effectively in parallel for 6V. The basing diagram from any tube manual or tube data website will provide all details needed. But......as others have already pointed out, 6EU7s aren't all that rare. Unless you want to have huge horizons of tube rolling possibilities opened up to you, there's probably no objective need to make subs for the 6EU7.
