image.jpeg My dad brought me around 300+ tubes from flea market a couple days ago. I started looking thru the cache, and found some nice stuff Mullard 12ax7 long plate, 5u4 rectifiers, 5y3's a ton of old useless TV tubes. But there are a ton of these rca, tung sol, sylvania, many brands, 6sn7, 6cb5, 12au7, 12sn7, and many more close to that. I researched a bit and found they are decent preamp tubes. What should i do? Can i test them, and maybe build a cool preamp?

If you want to build something Aikida sells nice preamp kits that use either 6SN7 or 12SN7 tubes. Look for there octal preamp board. It's supposed to be highly rated. I have one here that's waiting for me to put together.

Thanks Bill,,those look very nice! I have to find a tester, then i can order the board. Looks like they sell the power supply boards too

image.jpeg Here is a little MULLARD 12ax7, looks unused. I have to find a couple more in the mountain of tubes the ole man brought me. I think the rectifier is a 5y3 but many of the unboxed tubes are hard to read by now

I picked up an old Mercury tube tester{emissions} and cant believe I waited as long as I did.I run 3 separate tube rigs in my home and I buy /rehab/resell 5-10 tube amps a yr and not having a tester was a pain as most people want to know the shape of the tubes when buying amps/preamps.
First thing I did was get familure with testing and tested over 100 tubes I have for backup in my units.

12SN7 pairs nicely with 1625's to build a Williamson amp. 1625 is a 12 volt version of the 807 with a different, odd base. Think 6L6GC but for peanuts. The only hitch is you need the proper power transformer for it.

I don't know what a Williamson amp is...but i will research it. I think there are some 6l6GC tubes in the boxes. I am just having so much more fun since discovering tubes, and that with a good soldering station, some test equipment, one can restore, mod, or create something! Maybe i can pull off a build, just need to find myself a tube tester now...
