Hi There,

I've got an opportunity to get an 8080db. I've got a 7070, what I'm wondering is if the 8080db is worth upgrading to, or will they be pretty much the same?

Here's a quote by LBPete which spells out the difference between db, and non-db models. He's discussing an 8080, but the info applies to the 7070 also.

"The 890 is the black faced version of the 8080. These are great receivers in their own right but use a totally different amp, preamp, power supply and protection circuit than the DB models. They do have similar tuner sections but even there they are not identical. The only thing they have in common are similar names and exterior appearance.

Another difference is the way they wire multiple pairs of speakers. The DB models run them in series. The non-DB models run them in parallel. There are several posts on this topic. You can do a search if you want to know more"

Also, there's obviously a step up in power with the 8080db. I think of the db models as more refined. You will hear a difference IMHO.:thmbsp:

I think that he's talking about the 8080 vs 8080db, not the 7070 vs 8080db.

The 8080 was made before the 7070 and 8080db.

Well, I can say with authority that there is a difference between the 7070 and 8080db. The specs are very different between models, and well, I did get the 8080db, and it is much nicer, not that the 7070 was bad, just not nearly as nice as the 8080db.

The 8080DB and 7070 will have similar sound characteristic. The 8080DB is a significant upgrade. Much more robust power supply and a better tuner. You won't be disappointed.

I am loving it, but it is missing the sparkle in the high end. I'm guessing that a re-cap should take care of that.

But that midrange is silky smooth. Haven't really played with the tuner too much, I'll have to hook up an an antenna and try it out.
