8900zdb

I know the 8900ZDB was built after the glory days of Sansui. I just couldn't resist one ("mint"...we'll see) for $93. Can anyone tell me about the unit. Is it like the 9900Z with less power? Any information will be appreciated.

The 8900zdb (120W/c) is less powerful than the 9900zdb (160W/c). I bought my 8900zdb while stationed in Japan in 1980. The 9900 also allows for 3 sets of speakers. I built the rest of my stereo system around the 8900. But unfortunately while awaiting my recent divorce, my ex blew the stereo. The receiver works, but no output except through the audio jacks. it appears the right channnel has a couple of blown transisters,a blown capacitor and a couple of "overheated" resistors. A buddy of mine has the 9900zdb, but not for sale. Would you be interested in selling your 8900?

I have a 7900Z and it rocks with a killer light show. It does not fit in the entertainment center so my wife said no way. I got an AU-719. The 7900 @ 100WPC sounded better than the $500 new Marantz receiver I returned.
I believe you will be impressed with your 8900ZDB.

Past prime, but not at the bottom!

So, I guess I'd agree that that x900z series are clearly past Sansui's prime years. But lets face it, that does not mean they went completely to trash. Think of this as a sine wave function with x0x0 and Gx000 series at the peak. The 8900Z is just on the falling slope NOT AT THE BOTTOM. It took several generations to get all the way down (if, indeed, they did). I think some of these slightly off-peak units may be the real bargains for exactly this reason. The AU-D9/D11 (which I believe are about the same vintage) are another good example. Now to be fair, I much prefer to LOOK at the Big G's, but then this is supposed to be mostly about listening, right? I find the two lower-end x900z's I own to be very, very pleasant listening! As a matter of fact, I am hoping to acquire an 8900Z and/or a 9900Z for my collection.
