9090db caps

Hi all This is a two part question , first Im in the process of recapping a 9090db and while looking through the service manual i see different discriptions of caps used and one of them is a low noise caps, where are these used in the receiver ? I removed all the caps from the tuner board and ordered more pansonic FC caps for it , am I about to make a mistake useing the pansonic caps in the tuner board ? The farther I go with this recap job the more I find out that their is a lot more to it than just replacing parts ,making digrams , parts list , getting and useing the right parts ,praying you dont make a mistake . Ok part two, I have a G8000 and a G9000 that I want to recap when I'm done the 9090db . I want to replace the protection and speaker relays in the 8000 and 9000 and looking through the schmatics i could find the part number for them except the sansui numbers . would anybody have the part numbers for them ? I have the part no. for the 9090db protection relay ant thought maybe i could get them all at one place thanks englissa

The "low noise" caps are always colored orange. They are very obvious on the boards. Panasonic FCs are way better than Sansui's "low noise" caps. You can use the FCs everywhere.

I believe the protection relays for the big G's are Omron LY2-02-DC24. Digikey stocks them at a very reasonable price. The protection relay for the 9090DB is an Omron MY3-02-DC24. Digikey doesn't carry it but you can ususally get them from the relaycenter.com. They have a $30 minimum order so you may be best off getting all three from there.

Pete someone a while back made comment about the orange being something special (been quite a while back ) I would really hate to go and make a mistake and wonder why it dont/wont work right when i get done, On the relays if I have to pay a minimum i like to get as much bang for my buck as i can. . Thanks Pete englissa

englissa.... If you have a parts list put together, would you be willing to post it here? The factory service manuals are not very good at identifying all of the electrolytic caps that are required on each board.

9090db caps list

hpsenicka Yes this I can do, Its on Two pages. As far as I know it is accurate BUT their could be a mistake but I dont think so I also included a parts list that i used to order with this is what I ordered and claim no responsiablity for it, parts were ordered fron DIGIKEY and are pansonic FC series englissa

The orange caps are Sansui's "low noise" caps. They are not magic, just better quality than the general purpose caps used in other locations. I routinely replace them with Panasonic FCs with good results. If you want to use blackgates to replace the orange ones, that would be OK too. Personally, I don't think the extra money for blackgates makes a lick of difference in the overall sound. It just increases the bragging rights.

Pete bragging rights i can live without on this receiver just want to fixer up in a good fashion and make it dependable as this is my first, took me a week to get them all out as my eyes get buggy after 10 or 15 caps, remove cap, note id number, note polority , mark drawing, write value down move on to next . I took pictures of the boards with the caps removed so I can id the pads when I start number two unit should make thing move a little faster plus i have second unit caps in hand fo the main chassie

hpsenicka I hope you got the list you asked for, thats a lot of work making that up, gee just wait till i do the G8 and G9 receivers, least I know what I'm in for englissa

A couple of things to keep in mind. Most electrolytic have polarity, a negative and a positive lead. The positive and negative leads on the replacement cap need to be installed in the same orientation as the cap you removed.

Sansui likes to slip in a few “BiPolar” electrolytic. There are a few on the power supply board and I think there is one on the protection board. Be sure to replace them with bipolars. These caps can be installed either way.

Pete I all ready done all the main chassie and it powers up fine let it run about 10 min and saw no smoke or heard no popping now if i can find what the power meter bulbs should be, looking at the sevice manual i belive they are 6.3v 75 ma ? , got anouther 9090db to go pick up friday won it tonight on the bay , local pick up . suppose to have some problems ,stays in protect mode, driver board is my guess englissa

Wow, I can't add anything to this thread other than I am very impressed with th knowledge of the people on this board. You guys are making an old former electronics tech like me feel stupid. :)

6.5v 75ma sounds about right. Talk to AK member dgwojo, the bulb guy.

Submariner, there are all types here from professionals to novices. One of the best things about this site is that we all try to help each other out. The more you hang arround, the more you will learn.

Pete I've ordered from dgwojo before , with some luck I may have it redone within anouther month not including the case thats anouther story . Wish I could make out for you AK get together next month , maybe if I didnt spend all my money on stereo equip. I could afford a ticket ??????

Submairmer I know just enough to get into trouble but I'm learning englissa

Don't forget to deoxit and set the bias/offset while you are in there. It will save you the hassle of opening it up later!

My 26 year old ears can't hear any difference between blackgate and Panasonic FC caps.

I've been reading some old Stereo Review magazines recently. They contain some detailed test reviews by Julian Hirsch. By the late 1970s the majority of the amps and receivers tested had no measurable distortion, in the range of 0.002%. This is well below the audio threshold of human hearing. This gear pretty much used regular general purpose caps thoughout with some "low noise" caps in critical locations.

As EW is fond of pointing out, the chemistry used in today's caps makes them leagues better than what was available back then. If you use good caps like the FCs, you are basically installing caps that were beyond the dreams of the engineers of the time. So if the gear had low distortion levels when it was new, it will be even lower now after the installation of modern caps. The exotics like blackgates cannot make it any better.

That's a great thought to ponder. I hope more restorers read your post - it will save them some serious loot!

I'll point out one thing...BlackGate is 'bout the only manufacturer making decent high-quality bipolar electrolytic caps. If you need a non-polar electrolytic for an important signal path cap, you can count your choices on one hand with fingers left over.
