A Boxingday experiment that is surprising the hell out of me. Klipsch vs. Technics

A day off is a time to play.....
I have several setups and many different sets of speakers and one shoot out I have never done (until now) was a horn on horn Klipsch Conwall Vs. Technics SB E100.
I have owned the Cornwalls for 13 yrs. or so and the Technics for almost 2 yrs, but always on different systems so today they went head to head.
I have always thought my Cornies were the best sounding speakers I owned.......now to my shock I'm not so sure.
The Klipsch have the better bass, but all around sounding.....as of this moment.....I am leaning towards the Technics as the better sounding speaker. Smother, better highs and nicer mids.
How can this be?????

Once upon a time, Technics SB series was TOTL!. They made awesome stuff back then, like it or not. They had the SE and SU series power amps and pre-amps that were something. Not a Technics fan but you gotta admit!.
 
Have you tried the Technics on the bottom? The smooth top/mids could be the height difference. The bass in being reinforced to the Klipsch Conwall Vs by the floor.
 
When I am listening they are not stacked. I just stacked them for the picture.......and to piss off the wife, telling her this is the way things were going to be from now on. Thank God she has a sense of humor.

What measurements? For the Technics? Box size, is 20 5/8 X 33 1/4 X 16 5/8 (12 inch woofer) .......37-22000 Hz.........95 db 1w @1m.
For the Cornwall Box size, is 35.75" x 25.5" x 15.5" (15 inch woofer)......38-20000Hz.........98.5dB @ 1watt/1meter

Not sure if this is what you are asking about.
 
Doesn't come as a shock to me at all. Technics was very serious about their product development and production. You've got two good pairs there!
 
By measure I mean a microphone and frequency response in the room. Some on this board have instruments to "see" the sound. Your ears are really what matters in the grand scheme though. Some of the threads by Zilch are most informative.

No I did not.
I used the Room EQ Wizard (REW 5.1) when I set up my home theater, but honestly I prefer what I hear over what I see on a monitor.
Like you said "the ears are what matter".
 
Those Technics look like some serious speaker.I,have a while back stopped thinking what should be better and like what sounds better to my ears.I have a set of speakers that I probably couldn't $40 for at a yard sale yet I prefer over many well regarded speakers that have come through my house.

Well the ears have made the decision. The Technics have won by a slim margin. I may have to do the Crites upgrades and try this again.
I am actually a little disappointed. I thought the Klipsch would have won.
