This wasn't a pay on the spot kind of deal. Going to large estate sales is actually my job. But yeah, I can see how this seems impossible after reading everyones response.

Listen, pal- I'll be serious-You have just about hit the Mother Load, the Jackpot most of the rest of us here will look for the rest of our lives....I don't know as much about audio as most of the rest of the other fellows here-i'm into old radios 'n' tvs-they just basically tolerate me here, 'cause ever once in awhile, I'll say something funny or outrageous-But I DO know you lucked into a "Gold Standard" system there-something most of 'em here would give their eyeteeth for... Welcome to AK ! I hope you decide to keep & enjoy yr incredible good fortune...
 
Going to that sale and seeing this gear come up must have been like one of those moments in the movies, you know the ones, where Ode to Joy comes blasting forth and raises you out of your seat.
 
This is without a doubt the mother lode of vintage gear at one sale. As was mentioned, the substitution of the 7c preamp instead of the 7t would have made it perfect. If you reach the right collector in Hong Kong this system will sell well north of $10,000. Not that I'm advocating you flip it. You should absolutely have it inspected and serviced by a good tech and then have a listen for a month or year or lifetime. I wish I could stumble across that kind of system just once.
 
What would have been a real pity is if he didn't have the $2000.00 to spend! Those of us who didn't would be waking up in a cold sweat years from now! Our wives would be asking us why we were wandering around muttering to ourselves, acting as if we needed professional help! :yes: Nice score man! Keep as cool as you can! Take that stuff to the best shop in town. Tell them that one scratch upon completion is one scratch too many. Let us know how it comes out. Then, the party is at your house! :yes: Brad

I paid 2k for all of it. When I saw it all I knew it was definitely worth getting but again, I had no idea what its true value was. I asked the house manager running the sale how much for all the audio equipment and she said without hesitation, "two thousand". She told me that the old folks who owned the equipment bought it all brand new back in the day. This estate sale was not about making money, it was about getting rid of everything as quickly as possible.

Still working on setting everything up. Will keep you posted.

Agreed on the variac, depending on the age and branding of the tubes, just powering on with a bad filter cap somewhere could destroy some very valuable and irreplaceable tubes, my last dyna ST70 score had a perfect quad of telefunken EL34's in it......... worth more than i paid for the whole amplifier!

Have a qualified tech power all that tube stuff up slowly on a variac, it'll cost far less than what you could potentially ruin.
 
Score of a lifetime man! I'm surprised there wasn't a JBL Paragon to go with it! Estate sales are the best venue for picking up entire systems. You never see that sort of thing at thrift stores.

I agree with other posters that it would be a good idea to put another few hundred dollars into having the entire system serviced and reconditioned. Perhaps the AK community could recommend someone in your area.

naw................. the original builder of that system was more of a hartsfield or EV patrician kinda guy. LOL

My brother dated a woman who lived in Newport Beach. She had an amazing vintage Rolls Royce Convertible in the garage, with hardly a speck of dust on it; she sometimes drove it, but kept it covered the rest of the time! :yes: It is the kind of neighborhood where people have such toys. I'd suggest any AKers who live in that area should probably keep a close eye on any sales anywhere near there. It wouldn't surprise me if there were more "dream systems" coming out of that neighborhood from time to time.

As for the comment about some collector in Hong Kong buying the Marantz gear, just two days ago I saw here in Hong Kong a Marantz 7 (C, I think; early production) in nearly perfect condition. It looked like it had just been taken out of the box for the first time, except for the tiniest hint of age-oxidation on a few plugs in back (easily cleaned), complete with all original packing, receipt, even the catalog and an original ad, all in as-new condition. The wood case was also flawless; the wood seemed not to have darkened with age at all. I couldn't find a scratch or mark anywhere; the edges were sharp... the phrases "time warp" and "time capsule" kept occuring to me as I looked at it. The asking price? US$4,480.

Did I want it? Yes. :yes:
Did I get it? No, not at that price. :no:
Will someone else here buy it at that price? Undoubtedly. :yes:

I'm actually in Oregon right now. I had everything carefully moved up here.

If someone on here could point me to someone they personally recommend in the Pacific Northwest (or anywhere on the west coast if the person is very highly recommended) for reconditioning the amps, preamp and tuner, I would be most grateful.

Is there any chance I could have Marantz work on everything? Just wondering :)

I think we can pretty much retire the "I Scored XXXX" award now and send it to Airtight. You have audio history in your hands now buddy. Take good care of it and keep us posted on your impressions. Thanks for sharing your incredible fortune.
 
In 1984, the Detroit Tigers got off to the best start after the frist 40 games in Major League history, with a record of 35 - 5. Somewhere in the midst of that amazing winning streak, the Yankees radio annoucer Phil Rizzuto was broadcasting a game from the stadium in the Bronx. At one point during the game, the Tiger's final score, another win, was announced at Yankee Stadium. Rizzuto tossed down his headphones in a fit of frustration and said (paraphrased) "I can't believe it! I give up!!"

I now know how Rizzuto felt after reading this thread, and I'll not be going to any estate sales or garage sales for some time to come.



























Just kidding (though it is a true story about Rizzuto!). Congrats on the most awesome score we've seen in these parts in some time!
