A computer issue and Deoxit.

I dodged a big bullet this morning. I was playing an online video game when both computer screens went black. Of course, right in the middle of a dungeon run.

However, both monitors were turned on. And the computer was on. I decided to reboot the computer and got this screen:


I've never seen this error statement before, and I started to panic. This looks like a fatal error of $$$$ proportions.

I recall what a computer technician once told me: "A majority of boot-up problems in a usually well-running computer are typically connection issues. Pull each peripheral component one by one, clean the contacts, and treat with a thin coat of DeOxit D5. Plug each peripheral back in one by one and try rebooting."

Sure enough, it was one of the memory RAM cards. All has been well.

This is just like problems with tube amps. A large percentage of sudden problems are connection issues.

BTW: The MAC address is specific for testing memory.

Well, at least I have a lot of the stuff sitting around. It works well for auto connection issues, too, which can have oddball symptoms.

I fixed a friends cd player essentially the same way. Reseated a ribbon cable and it's been playing fine since.

I find that the lubricating characteristics of some contact cleaners can help prevent connection issues from recurring.

Definitely. Someone mentioned just re-seat the RAM, a dose of de-oxit negates the need to re-seat them ever again. A can of de-oxit would have been handy in the Nintendo cartridge days when you had to blow on the contacts.

Second day of ownership of an old Volvo 240 wagon. Got a LOT of electrical things going again and keep a can in the glovebox. A lot of owners replace the troublesome bullet connector fuse rack, I just gave it a spray and have had zero issues.

I had two 240s that I renovated (restored would be an exaggeration....I got them running well, no squawks, and ready for another couple hundred thousand miles....great cars). Got real good about doing the ol' "bullet fuse spin" ...

Yes I feel sorry for you Americans who drive on the LHS and have a 240 fuse box in close proximity with wet and snowy feet.

I'd forgotten about the "fuse spin' which gave me a good chuckle. Used to have to do it on my old Mercedes 450SLC on a regular basis.

Weird, glad its back. Had an issue about 10 yrs ago with my wife's laptop overheating and shutting down. In a wild attempt I found the GPU overheating big time even though it had plenty of thermal paste. I placed a high copper penny, forgot what year, on top with some more paste and it worked great for another couple years.

So far, so good! Boot-ups have been uneventful.
