A couple of speaker projects this weekend

So in the last couple of weeks I picked up a pair of Sansui SP-2000s that needed a crossover recap and a pair of EPI M-110s that needed to be refoamed. Ordered the parts for the Sansui's from this thread and the foam from Simply Speakers. Since everything arrived Friday and I didn’t have much going on this weekend, I took the opportunity to work on both of them. Each turned out really good in my opinion.

Although the Sansui's sound was better after the recap and are much improved, I am really impressed with the EPIs like many here. Now I understand why they are held in such high regard! The only thing left on the EPIs is to relocate the emblem on the speaker covers as the previous owner decided to glue them on the fabric in the wrong locations after coming off...o_O

After the glue is dry the drivers are reinstalled and tested - dang they sound great!

So now my issue with the covers - as I mentioned, someone decided to re glue the emblem back onto the fabric, but didn't make any effort to put them in the correct location.

Glue residue

Also, as you can see, there is glue residue on the fabric. Any suggestions on how to remove the emblems without breaking them, and how to remove the residue (if possible) without harming the fabric? I was thinking of a heat gun or hair dryer to soften the glue and it might pull off, but it could ruin the fabric.

The other option would be to just purchase some new fabric and not mess with the glue residue.

What type of glue? Some might come off with heat some might respond to a solvent.

You should be able to peel the emblem off the glue using a putty knife to keep the emblem from bending/breaking. Guessing it is plastic. Maybe if the heat works on the glue, soften it before pulling the emblem and maybe apply the heat from the back.

Those speakers are veneered aren't they? My M50s came out great with an Acetone washcloth bath, 320-grit sanding just to smooth them and a nice healthy drink of Howard's Feed-n-Wax. Mine didn't have much in the way of dings, bumps and bruises so I did a very minimal restoration of the oiled walnut finish. The Acetone cuts the old dirty oil and cleans the speaker of all the dirt collected over the past 40 years.

So I was able to very gently pry off the emblems clean so that part worked out. I am not sure what type of glue\adhesive it is, but looking at how easy the emblems peeled off, it looks more like hardened glue from a heat gun. I will work on the covers this weekend, trying a few different things to see if I can get the glue off.

Blue, Nice job on those M50s! Yes, I believe my M-110s are veneered, and they could probably use a little cleanup to make them look even better. Thanks for the info.
 
Maybe you'll be lucky and it's a water soluble glue. Try wetting a small area for a while and see if it starts to soften.
 
Just an update on the EPIs - I have been listening to them on and off for almost 2 months and they sound wonderful! As for the grills, I tried to remove the glue/adhesive the other night but was not successful. I tried several things and it would not come off. I was trying to delicately pick at the stuff but no luck. Tried a heating gun on low but it seemed that it would soften but seep into the fabric even more and still be noticable. Tried some Goo Off type remover and still nothing. With that, I have decided to buy some new fabric and recover them. While I am at it, I am also going to recap the crossovers and replace the wire clips as suggested in other threads. I am looking forward to seeing how they sound after the recap.
 
Another update on the EPIs - I successfully recapped them a few months ago and redid the covers with some different material. I guess I didn't order the correct fabric as it was more "plastic" feeling than cloth fabric as expected, and now I believe the material was more for guitar amps and such. Since I spent the money I did my best to use the material. A little snug when placing them on the speakers but doable. Sound wise the crossover recap really opened them up with more detailed sound (lows and highs). Oh and I upgraded the terminals too with ones for banana plugs. Really happy with them!

Yeah, I noticed that the highs were not working after I brought them home so I opened the one up and then I saw why...the one cap had definitely exploded!

I've pulled them back out recently and have been listening to them for about a week on and off and I have to say they do sound pretty good like many others have mentioned.
