A couple questions about my Akai R/R

This is the 2nd one I bought. The first one got the spindle bent in shipping and had to be returned to seller. This one is cleaner (not the one in photo) and does not smell musty like the first one. Overall a nicer machine from what I can tell.



I watched a couple of videos on YouTube on how to run it. One video had the tape going on top of the roller (marked in red) and one video had the tape going below roller as is shown in the photo.

Which way is right to load the tape, on top of the roller or the bottom of roller?

Also the roller marked in green has some discoloration from tape on the rubber. How do you know when to clean it? Is rubbing alcohol good to use?

On bottom I believe. No alcohol on that roller! You can use Q-Tips and a light detergent to clean all rubber and can use 95% Alcohol to clean all metal tape paths again can use Q-Tips

I also believe you have it threaded correctly. If you are going to keep this unit you should go to HiFi Engine and download the owner's manual and service manual. Not only would that give you the authoritative source for threading the transport but other helpful things as well.
