A DVD store that sells vinyl *and* turntables :)

I dont own a single vinyl record much less a turntable, but in a world where the CD is an endangered species having access to a brick-and-mortar shop like this gives me hope. Vinyl has a bit of a following among Thais with disposable income, but I'd previously thought that was restricted to Bangkok - you can imagine my surprise as I browsed the CDs are my local Boomerang and found myself staring at a wall festooned with vinyl albums. Note that this isnt a 'dodgy DVD' operation - unfortunately 'genuine' tends to mean imported and therefore expensive in Thailand.

(1000THB is currently a little over 31USD but to working class Thais its a sizeable chunk of their monthly take-home pay - even in Bangkok)

Apparently they sell turntables too - the TD-158 isnt going to set too many hearts aflutter here FWIR, but surely it's a step in the right direction for Thai youngsters wanting to get into vinyl. I live in a tourist town, but I doubt that too many tourists are heading to the airport with an entry-level turntable in their carryon baggage :D

Apologies for the splashscreens on those pages but this IS a DVD store - when was the last time you saw a turntable at Blockbuster ? To give folk an idea of the dross I was confronted with at a similar franchise in Australia, this is what JB Hi-Fi (a gross misnomer) have under 'Turntables' -

Regardless of how you get your fix - and I still like to have the silver disc where possible - it's good to have choices. Anyone can import a turntable, or a tonearm/cartridge/whatever, but to have ready access to vinyl locally seems like a step in the right direction for mine even if the prices make me wince. Spent a small fortune on hi-res downloads yesterday but it was a bigger kick to see that vinyl laid out for the locals - took me back to 1978 :thmbsp:

I visited our local JB HiFi on the weekend just to have a look around after it had been renovated. First time I have ever seen vinyl records for sale at JB. They got a small section now. It is nothing compared to the number of CDs and DVDs they sell, but it is obviously a recognition that, despite it's small number, vinyl is dabbling it's pinkie in the mainstream stores.

Our local Hastings has had a small record section, which has been enlarged, for some time now. Best Buy even has a few albums, but so far they are just token...
