A fair trade for my DQM-9c's?

I'm thinking of doing something which might or might not be foolish and hope someone can provide me with some guidance.

I have a very nice pair of Dahlquist DQM-9c speakers that I bought new in 1985. They are in very nice condition and I'd never really thought about parting with them. My neighbors brother has offered me $250 and a pair of either Dynaco A25's or a pair of Advent Utility Speakers. He doesn't have enough cash to offer me a straight out price and I really don't know if I want to get rid of the Dahlquists. If I should decide to do the trade, would I come out okay with what he's offering? Would either set of speakers be okay with my Yamaha AX-500U integrated amp? Would there be a huge difference in the sound of the speakers and what I have now?

I probably won't do this deal, but I sure don't want to get hammered if I take the plunge. I'm afraid letting go of my Dahlquists would be like losing a sibling.

I'm going to scope out the two sets of speakers and see how they look and sound. I'm leaning toward keeping what I have simply because I know how they sound and I know what I've got. If I were really looking to sell I'd probably jump all over that offer.

I have a a hard time thinking the Dahlquists wouldn't fetch more than $100. Not even in the ball park IMHO.

I agree that you should listen before coming to any conclusions. A25s and utility Advents are pretty common speakers and routinely can be had for very little. They sound decent (well, I will say the A25s do, I'm not a fan of Advents) but whether they sound anywhere near as good as DQ-m9c is only a call that your ears can make. I wouldn't make the trade, personally, but we all have different likes and dislikes.

Well, I went to take a look and listen at both sets of speakers offered as trade. Cosmetically they were in such a condition that I didn't even bother listening to them. I figure if someone doesn't have the decency to take care of their equipment, no matter the cost, then I'd rather not have it. Maybe that's a personality flaw, but my Dahlquists are in almost new condition. I spent an arm and a leg to buy them back in 1985 and have treated them with care.

No deal this time around.

Upgrade fever. I haven't had much remorse over losing some of my gear...because I keep it all! Brau-hahahaha!!!!

:yippy:

....okay not exactly. I have thinned the herd a bit. But I'm a double digits DQ fan, even like those Nextel ones so for me the choice is obvious. They need power though. Could be something upstream of your 9c's will inject more life into your listening space?

Locally Advents and a Dynaco A-25 would fetch less than $250. More like around $100 or less. I got my Advent 5002s for $70. That was down from $100 when it didn't sell the first month. I see prices are inflated on eBay.

You would have to really like the Advent sound to pay more than $100. And they better have been refoamed properly.

I've been running my speakers with a Yamaha AX-500U Integrated amp. I'd like to have a bit more power to push them, preferably a preamp/amp setup. I've never been one to like receivers because in my area FM reception sucks and most of the stations you get clearly are country which I can do without. I'm considering anp amp kit, but not sure that will happen since I had to buy another prosthetic leg.

You should be able to get all kinds of stations using the computer. Before I set up a Technics ST-8600 tuner with my Yamaha CA-2010, I was using my computer with a pair of Gateway/Altec Lansing powered speakers and subwoofer and some free radio player I got off the net. Unfortunately it was trialware and stopped after a few months of play.

Most radio stations have their own websites that you can stream from and iTunes is free and has lots of great radio stations and there is Pandora and Last.com

Enjoy your Dahlquists.
I know I do.

Eric

I forgot all about the internet radio stations....duh. I have my pc connected to my audio system so I can listen to my digital music collection. Thanks for the reminder.
