A few options. Wattage and integrated or power amp with volume controlled DAC/pre

Hi all,

I was recently looking at some of the Rogue Cronus Magnum amps and Primalunas on the second hand market.

The Dark model Magnum I was looking at went off market so now I’m not sure what to do.

I have a pair of 87.4dB/2.83v 4 ohm CSS Typhon and also a pair of Focal Sopra 1 and some other speaks that I’d like to power with these models ranging from 100 or 95w in UL mode to ~60-65wpc? in Triode mode for the Rogue or 70wpc for the Primaluna in UL or 40wpc in triode mode.

I have a Topping E70 Velvet DAC with volume control and a Mytek Brooklyn DAC+ With phono and volume control. I realize the Rogue has a phono stage which would free up the Brooklyn DAC+ for headphone duty if I wanted to use the e70 and built in MM stage.

Is the Primaluna at 40 or 70wpc up to the task of powering a speaker like this that is ported and goes to about 20Hz in room? I listen about 1/10w or so almost never a full watt with my 200wpc solid state. I do like that the Primaluna in autobiasing not that it seems difficult for the rogue to be biased.

Any tips on how it might sound if I go for power amp only or the all tube integrated route. Those are my main questions. Thanks

I have a PrimaLuna Dialogue Premium pre-amp & DP HP power-amp. It has no problem pushing a pair of 86db Revel F30's I have in Triode mode.
I sent my pre in for service once and I used my Marantz ND-8006 as the pre. It sounded good but not as good as the tube pre to me.

6 ohm with 3 ohm min. That’s good info.

Still not sure what I want to do though, replacing 8 tubes is quite a bit for the EVO 400 or the DP HP power amp I’m looking at. EL34 aren’t too bad though. If I want to step up to KT88 or something it’s a little more I think. 120 or 150 are probably too power hungry to make sense.

How does it take to tube rolling the 12au7s. I have some from my headphone amp somewhere I hope, after a move.

The Cronus Magnum III or Dark model has a good bit more oomph id suppose than the Primalunas but it’s a little less refined. I know the Sopra 1 will probably like the Primalunas just fine but these 4ohm towers dig to 20Hz for real so I’m just co sliced without being able to try and bring stuck with it really.

I do like that the PL have a ready to go binding post for 4ohms vs having to swap but I suppose thr 3.9min ohm Sopra would be fine with the Magnum amp set to 4 ohms as well. Idk. These are the hardest part, along with finding something to listen to.

I dug out the Sopra and hooked up my SVS SB13 Ultra for some variety. Sounding good. Kinda just dreaming for an activity on lazy days but ready to pull the trigger. PL has a bit more of a luxury feel and the Magnum has the extra grunt. Just thinking out loud if anyone has anything to offer.
