Howdy! Bought a house & moving to another state, so why not pick up some vintage speakers on the drive?!
I have a Marantz 2240 feeding some EPI m100's right now and they sound pretty damn good to my ears. Picking up a pair of EPI 120b fer $50 on the way to see how they fair against the m100's. There's a few other speakers along the drive I could grab between $60-$100 but due to funds I'll have to rest on just 1 more pair.
The options are JBL j2080's - KLH model 20's - and OHM C2 speakers. Anyone have experience with some or all of these? I actively listen to every genre of record & like 'em a little loud. Thanks!

i just got a pair of ohm C2 a couple of weeks ago and i must say they sound extremely nice with my marantz 2245, i also tried them with my Fisher 500C and they were wonderful with tubes also. I have not heard the other two so i cant compare but i dont think you would go wrong with a pair of the Ohm. I was running them without a sub and they had plenty of bass and good sound stage. They have different sound then my Ohm Walsh 2XO and 4's as they are a different design. not sure how to describe the difference in sound maybe more concert like. Mine are refoamed but otherwise original. i would recommend them.

Oooh nice, looks like I'm onto somethin'! I read they were considered high-end in the early-80s market. Would you describe the sound as tight & punchy or more broad & airy?
 
maybe broad and airy didnt really have that in your face sound.i was pleasantly surprised at how good they sounded i wasnt expecting them to as good as my other ohms but they were in their own way. if you can get a pair in good shape for the $60-100 you mentioned it would be excellent price in my opinion. i paid $245 but they were mint and refoamed. they are front ported also so it makes placement easier.

So I got the Ohm C2 speakers today, they seem to have a more west coast sound than my EPI m100's! Very bright/crisp, not nearly as much mids even with the low tweeter all the way up. I WOULD be psyched but I've read they are supposed to be a monster with bass, and these aren't! They were recently refoamed by the last owner and I wonder if he botched the job somehow. These 10" woofers aren't as full/punchy as the 8" in my EPIs. Maybe the Ohm woofer upgrade is needed? Or maybe something to do with the old crossover? Not sure at all as I'm new to speaker maintenance... Lemme know if ya have any ideas!

Mine have plenty of bass not sure i would call it punchy though. And the mids are good as well. You could try replacing the capacitors on the crossovers there are only 2 in each speaker i was told they were straight behind the woofer and easy to get at with the woofer removed. I was going to do mine but they sound so good im in no rush. The specs are 37hz so you should have good bass and the lack of mids makes me think its more of a crossover issue then woofer

Ah, looks like I'll try the capacitors 1st then. Thank ya kindly! I'll letcha know how big/small a difference in the sound is

i found this on the ohm site I didnt know this was in the speaker, ( SBA
The SubBass Activator is an electrical circuit which extends the deepest bass when the music calls for it, reduces the distortion for cleaner sound, increases the dynamic range for greater impact, and uses a self-resetting protection circuit to reduce the chance of damaging the speakers.)
if the caps dont help this might be the next step they have replacements available
