A Further Apology to Turntables and Turntablites

Sorry!!! Yes, I still am a Turntablite!

I am going to be buying a Very Nice SME 3009 s2i soon. I am going to be very, very, very happy with it. I am going to listen to and enjoy it.

But I have to say, I'm planning on going at least 50%, if not more, digital. I wasn't too keen about the idea until a few weeks ago at the LAX First Annual H3 meet, where every setup except mine was digital, and sounded absolutely

FANTASTIC!!!

And I love the convenience of it. So I ordered a PS Audio Digital Link III from Theoman that should be here on Monday. Yay!!!

So now I am both analog and digital!

Yippee!

Vinyl > Vinyl/Cassette > CD/Cassette > CD > CD/SACD > CD/SACD/FLAC > CD/SACD/FLAC/Vinyl > CD/SACD/FLAC/Vinyl/R2R > CD/SACD/FLAC/Vinyl/R2R/Cassette

There's nothing wrong with doing both. Enjoy the ride, Ben. I'm right now transferring WAV, AIFF and FLAC files to my just installed (30 minutes ago) network drive.

Cool, and I have Spotify! If I love something that much, I'll buy it, but it sounds Great!

I like digital. I've got close to 2,000 CDs and tons of bootleg concerts on MP3. Then there's Reel-To-Reel and cassettes. It's all good.

CDs are hot at yard sales and thrifts right now. Tons of them available for dirt cheap. Everyone is ripping them to hard drives and Ipods and dumping the 'big and bulky' CD's. I've been making some killer scores of CDs this past summer.

Its supposed to be about the music, not the format. Nothing wrong with both digital and analog.

It's definitely nice to have both analog and digital formats to choose from. Some (typically older) music is only available on vinyl, and some (typically newer), only on CD. I mostly use the vinyl rig when I want to seriously LISTEN to music and relax, and CDs when I want background music while doing something else, or just feel too lazy to be flipping records (yeah, I know how that sounds... :D), but this isn't a hard-and-fast rule. Well-made CDs through a good system can also sound very good, very involving. My wife just plays CDs and not vinyl, perhaps out of fear of damaging something she doesn't understand as well, or perhaps because it would be admitting that the records (which she feels take up too much space, even though half my collection is rotated in/out of storage) are useful? :dunno:

Anyway, both have their uses and their place, and you may choose to stick with CDs only, or vinyl records only, or enjoy both. After all, it's your interest/hobby, and not something that anyone else should decide. But why limit yourself, when both can be good?

There is definitely room for both top quality vinyl and digital playback in any stereo system. Although I've personally spent way more time and money maximizing my vinyl playback systems, I have not neglected the digital side as there are plenty of times when it's preferable to listen to CD or SACD.

CD can sound fantastic, I just have a slight preference for the sound of vinyl, and on a low budget I had to commit to one or the other.

If you can do both well, that's the way to go :thmbsp:

The good thing about CD's that I find is that used is typically 10-70% the price of new, and sounds exactly the same! That's one of the goodnesses of CD's!

Hey, why are we praising CD's in the TT forum??? It just isn't natural!!!:D

That's for dang sure. A couple of weeks ago I hauled away several dozen AMAZING CDs, including jazz, early rock'n'roll, r&b/soul, and hillbilly - some SEALED and some IMPORTS - at my local Goodwill for $2/each. I couldn't believe the riches I brought home. I even left behind quite a few great discs (Miles Davis, Beatles, Clash, Brubeck, etc.) that I already owned, so someone else will be very happy too!

Amazon Marketplace is also filled with top notch CDs at bargain basement prices.

It's good to have both imo. Sometimes the mastering on one format is not as good as the other. Some cd's are butchered as are some lp's. Nice to have options.

:lmao::lmao::lmao:

I had a chuckle, too, and then I realized my journey was pretty much the same, once DVDA was put in place ight after R2R.:D
I never thought I'd own a cassette deck again, but I came across a beautiful Sony ES deck that I couldn't turn down.

+1

Digital audio rules.
Records rule too.

+2. I even have an eight track. Vinyl/cd/rtr/cassette/eight track and when i get all caught up on technology flac, dac, sacd, etc. I will probably never arrive at the end of my audio journey but what a fun trip it is.

agreed with all the music is what matters type posts. To Mackat, and I don't mean this to pick on you, but you seem to(based on posts I've read) spent far more time of late running through assorted hardware than simply enjoying your music. I hope I'm wrong, but I sometimes sense impatience with imperfection coloring your view of this hobby, and that would be a shame. As others have stated, all formats have pluses and minuses, but music is the core source of pleasure.

Right, each format has its relative strengths and weaknesses. One does not replace the other.

Yep, and it's music what matters. I have many records with music not available on CD or even on MP3. So my only way of getting such music is through records. And the sound is pretty good, so...
