This morning, I was in the mood for Bossa Nova. I was searching eBay and Discogs to see what was available at a price I liked. I was disappointed to see many versions of vinyl that were up there, $50 plus. However I did find a few that were prices I liked. Only all from different sellers except two.

I made a list of my wanted records, and then, this afternoon, my wife and I went to Value Village. It has been a week since I've gone as I've been fighting a nasty cold. In the first record bin, almost near the front, is Antonio Carlos Jobim - Wave! I couldn't believe my eyes. This is the second Bossa Nova I wanted to add to my collection, along with Tide. Awesome! I keep on looking, and find Astrud Gilberto/Walter Wonderley Trio - A Certain Smile A Certain Sadness! I don't know anything about this record, but I really like Astrud Gilberto, and the LP was in good condition, so the two Bossa Nova records came home with me.

So my wife and I are preparing to cook dinner together, and I think, what a perfect time to listen to Bossa Nova! So I put on Wave, get out my Tremontino Chefs knife, and start chopping. The record is sounding good on side one. Suddenly, the record starts to skate over the record. Huh? I go over and put it back at the beginning again, and it immediately starts to skate across again. Uh oh!

I put on my newly received Shure M91ED with hyper-eliptical stylus, and it plays beautifully! It looks like my Shure V15 IV with aftermarket VN45HE stylus has got a broken stylus! This is the first time ever, in all my 58 years, that I have lost a stylus while just playing a record. And I've been playing a lot of vinyl over the last 8 years.

Has this ever happened to you, or something like it?

While I've got your attention, maybe you could offer some advice on must have Bossa Nova records? I already have;

Cool! That is perfect! I had seen the Frank Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim, and it looks interesting! As for the others, thank you! I’ll keep my eyes out for them!

I would agree with you there. The one I have is very good!

I dated a Brazilian years ago, and it is funny that now I am thinking of those songs. I think it is the poignant way the words are phrased. I once played the world famous Lambada song for her, and she told me what it was about. A lament. It fits!

But I’ve loved Bossa Nova long before I met her, along with Lambada. I guess you could say I have long been drawn to Latin American music. It touches your heart, it is so emotion filled.

And a man and a women, if I recall correctly, brought Bossa Nova to the mainstream. Such a gorgeous sound track! That’s why I have the French and the English version. The French version of the movie wasn’t censored as I lived in Quebec at the time, so the French version was the first version I saw. The sound track followed many many years later. I wonder if it is a desperate last grasp for those fond memories of growing up in that time. I will say it wasn’t all fun and games, if anyone had a mortgage up for renewal when the interest rates were at 16-17%! And then woman's lib really threw every teen guy for a loop! How do you respond now! As if things weren't confusing enough in those days...

Most of my listening is a desperate last grasp for memories that weren't great at the time but would be wonderful to relive. I don't regret my life at all and i continue to search out new experiences but lps are a bittersweet form of time travel that i crave.

I'll second the Brazil 66. It gets lumped with all the herb alpert crap, but it's brilliant. It's also got some of the harshest vocals I've come across. It hasn't been rereleased. Look in the discount bins, this one goes under the radar.

If your table and system can play "one note samba" without any distortion on the highs, you've passed one of my tests. Vocals that aren't just in your face, they slice you wide open.
 
Too funny! I knew I had some Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66. The Fool on the Hill. It is sitting in my 'for sale' pile. I'll put it on for another listen. However, I'm assuming you are recommending the first one?

It has been my obsessive goal to be able to listen to any music without any distortion for the last 10 years. I have used the songs I love but contain distortion as my yardstick. Slowly, the yardstick has moved higher and higher. At first, it was super frustrating, but once I found the right direction, I never looked back.

I've never used any Bossa Nova as a test track.

I started going to thrift stores after reading all the scores people were finding, both in music, and in gear. However, I wasn't finding very much music, and no gear. I studied the different threads on Thrifts. The clues were there. I just had to find them. A lot has to do with timing, and the key was to increase the chances that I would be there when they were putting the gear out. Those days are over, but yesterday and my two Bossa Nova finds attest to the fact it still does happen. I guess Yin and Yang were in play yesterday as well. Find two treasures and lose one treasure in that broken stylus tip.

As far as a test it's spot on for those heavy s sounds. Sibilance I think is the term. I don't have any actual test records (yes, I know...) so this is one I use. Maybe it's a "hot" recording?

Thrift bins are tough, and they've gotten harder in the last couple years. Most of them have folks who work there picking them over beforehand I think. Fleas are my fav, but you've gotta get first look if you want any actual "scores". There's a huge amount of stuff still flying under the radar, but that's only going to last so long. Folks are pulling records out of storage at an increasing rate and flooding the market. It'll end sooner than I think most folks realize, but for now it's a mad dash...

I'm sorry maybe I wasn't clear. I was wondering which particular stylus you purchased so I can stay away from it. There are many non JICO aftermarkets out there
 
Carla Hassett is another good, new vocalist. Very, very hard to find vinyl. Mostly CDs and MP3.

I got it, but still can’t say where it came from. It was part of a Shure v15 cartridge I bought in bartertown. I should ask the seller where he got it. I may even do that. I will likely ask JelloAlien if he can find me one. I’ve never had any issues with his styli.

In the meantime, I’m enjoying my M91ED with one of his hyper-eliptical styli.

I think the setup wasn't quite correct, either. A bit of sibliance or some miss-tracking. Or maybe the LP needs good cleaning? Not my video. But, the only vinyl I could find of that great song.

Check for the Japanese pressing. It's prolly as good as the original Verve, with lower background noise. Another good one is "The Astrud Gilberto Album." Verve V6-8608. Van Gelder mastered. :)
