A KLH Model 22.

Hey everybody..

I was out and about yesterday and ran across a KLH Model 22 speaker. Yep, just one..and yes, I looked around for the other one. That was a little bit of a bummer.

Then I noticed the price tag. I thought it read $3.00...hmm..better put my glasses on and sure enough, it was just 3 bucks.



I don't know about all of you, but I will buy a 3 dollar KLH speaker. heh.



I had no idea if it worked or not and the cabinet is a little scratched up.



Over the course of a few years, until the fall of last year, I reconstructed my high school stereo system via ebay and thrift stores. That system consisted of a Realistic SA-1001 amp, a TM 1001 tuner and a pair of Realistic MC-1200 speakers.

This system sounds pretty good actually; nothing stellar but good and solid. It makes me feel good too..in reminiscing kinda way.

So, I get home with the KLH and disconnect the one of the MC-1200's and hooked up the KLH.

Wow..is the word. The MC-1200s aren't bad at all for what they are, but the KLH is an amazingly good sounding little speaker. The detail in sound is downright incredible to me; and this is an old speaker. I'm guessing from the early 1970s to maybe late 1960s?

It just needs a little bass boost with the eq.

I am now on the lookout for a second KLH Model Twenty Two.

Ain't it cool how a 3 dollar speaker can stir things up for somebody?

Good stuff radioripster, I too am in the process of going after all the stuff the guys a little older than I was as a teenager had. At the time it was new stuff but now I'm 54 so of course it's all vintage. Again my stuff is mid-fi at best but I feel great every time I get my hands on a piece of gear. But let's be clear about one thing my friend, you didn't buy that speaker you stole it! Let me know when you score it's brother I'm pullin' for ya.

I'm about to hit double nickels, I know what you mean, but I'm alright with it. Heck, both of us are vintage. heh.

It's fun to go back and find some of the stuff we had or wanted to have when were young. I've done a little bit of that and glad I did.

In my teenage years, it was Radio Shack stuff for me. I'd wait for the sale stuff or the "where is as is" when the fliers came out.

I had to layaway everything heh. Little bit at a time.

Yeah, 3 bucks is almost a crime for a nice old speaker like that. I 'spect I won't be as lucky when I find another one; which probably come from ebay.

I sure appreciate you pulling for me and I will report my findings!

I took the speakers out to look around inside..mainly to get the capacitor value to replace it. It's a 4uf bipolar cap, by the way. The inside of the cabinet is well thought out and nice. I'm impressed.

Both speakers have a date stamp of 9-19-1968 on the magnets. It's amazing...closing in on 48 years old and sounding great.

One of my favorite systems was a set of KLH 22s driven by an HK 330c. Very smooth and detailed.
Hope you can find a sibling to make up a pair.

KLH 22s are a very nice speaker. I'll always remember how theywere leagues above most speaks a friend and had going in an A/B listening wall. One minute a garage sale score....next minute we were reassessing our perceptions with what we had appreciated before! Truly a better developed speaker from the era.

Nice to hear you're having fun reacquiring gear you owned long ago. Every time I do that, I never use the gear, so I had to learn to let past gear remain there... though there was an item or two I would likely use. Anyway, I'm not at all suggesting that you should adopt my policy. Every time I see a Kenwood KR-6030 for sale (very infrequent), I get that buy-it twinge... I loved that receiver. But I know it would just end up unused in my audio closet. Better for me to let someone who may use it have a shot at it. Fun to read about your experience, and I must admit if the Kenwood was three bucks, of course I'd buy it (and it would still wind up in that closet).
