A Lesser Stylus on the V15 III?

A while back at a yard sale I found a Dual 1264 with a Shure V15 III for a price I won't reveal out of consideration for those of you who paid more than, say, two dollars for such a thing. :D

But all is not perfect: the Shure has a pretty much destroyed cantilever and before I order a new stylus I'd like to be certain the cartridge body is OK. Can I put a stylus from a lesser Shure (of which I have a bunch, R25XT, R1000XT, M97XE, M95HE) on the V15 body to see if it's OK?

The V15 styli were pretty unique, and even among the the V15 series (II, II, IV, etc.) were not interchangeable.

A couple of things to check: Shure made a V15 III that could only mount to Dual tables. Your V15 III might be one of those. If you plan to use the 1264 for your main table, it might be worth it to pick up a replacement styli for the V15. Ed Saunders sells one on *that* auction site that another forum member recently reviewed quite positively, and are priced quite reasonably.

Thanks for the reply. Just eyeballing the V15 on the Dual, it's got a half-inch mount and the usual four pins in the usual Shure pattern so I'd guess it's not Dual-only. I figured the styli wouldn't interchange, but it was a fond hope. Oh, well.

i tried one of ed saunder's generic carts on that auction site . before i bought it he said he would give me my money back if i didn't like it! it sounds average with my nad 3020a integrated amp but when run thru a pp2 phono preamp and then thru my van alstine superpas IV it's almost as nice as my denon dl103 or my at oc-9mkII. that's on a dual 701, my wife's table in the main system.

UMM, if it's a standard 1/2" mount then the generic V15 stylus would in all likely fit fine. Email Ed Saunders to be sure. For $15 it's hard to go wrong.

Check this out..

With the chance of getting blasted here I got a generic replacement from a guy who bought out Pfannesteil. Cost about $20 off Ebay. Put it on a Pioneer table and it sounded OK.:scratch2:
