Hi, friends ( :

I have an old mini system, but the lid won’t shut. I was told that if I somehow manage to remove the spring, I should be able to open/close it manually. True? Sorry, I am a noob, how can I remove it? ( : I guess I have to open the upper part and fortunately the lid should be connected with screws somewhere, but it looks pretty solid.

Regards ( :

Hey, welcome to Audiokarma !

Before trying to open the unit, I would try spraying some wd-40 or similar into the openings of the lid's "legs" (where the gear teeth are and opposite)
But cover the laser and mechanism with a tissue or something before you do that.
Then try to tap and gently push/pull on the lid to get the thing unstuck..
Might work, might not work, but it's worth a try....good luck.
Oh, and the spring ? what spring? to remove from where ? I don't know :-)

Not sure what spring may be in there, whether its a coil on a gear (noting the teeth on the left side of the lid support) or a straight spring hooked to a few tabs.
Maybe defining wont shut a little further...like locked into open position? If that's the case, I am thinking whatever that toothed lid support piece meshes with is out of place (either popped out of place or a broken part letting that get out of alignment and bind).
If a case of lid moves but wont stay down, then I would think that little black gripper is weak, either worn or has a hairline crack, so it wont grip that little finger at front right corner.
You can try a little oil back at hinge points, but I wouldn't count on that as a cure.

Thanks for the answers. Sorry, I will give more info now. By "spring" I meant that piece of metal on the left side (right side of the photo).
Bobaloniny, you are right, the black gripper is kind of loose and can't hold the finger. I thought that if i remove the spring/coil (which makes tension over the lid and rises it when i try to shut it) it would shut manually..i guess ( :

I gather it's not that the thing won't shut, it just won't stay shut. If that black gripper is metal, can you squeeze it a bit with pliers so it's tighter?

I think Sanyo made the push-in- push-out grabber thingus that holds the lids down on these things. it is a small replaceable module in most cases.

Maybe a couple twists of wire, small vinyl tie wraps or some shrink tubing one way or the other could help that little bugger grip like it meant it.
Other thought is keep a can of pork and beans next to the stereo for when you want the lid closed.:)
