That's a beast Sam. And you're right, definitely an AstroSonic. Andy, I would think you are right about the R2R, but for a 50, I'd give her a look! That small control panel above the speaker selector looks to have been added with the deck as well.

No tubes and that's one BIG HEAVY console; I'd leave it for someone else. :yes:
 
Its not that heavy, r2r is they heaviest part. That is an add on. But I have seen a SS maggie with an r2r, it was HUGE and heavy. It was very neat but way to big for me. I grabbed the stack of tapes from it hoping for some good music...no such luck. There is one out there though.
 
I was given a nivico console with R2R It was actually pretty decent I was kind of exited till I got it home and not one damn thing worked on it.I used the wood to make a few things the componets were crap.
 
All of the major brands, Zenith, RCA, GE, Magnavox, Silvertone, VM etc. offered a reel
to reel deck in their top of the line models, it was an expensive option to an already expensive console. Most top of the line models are hard to come by as they were
very large and expensive, most of what you see out there today are the lower and
midline models. The one in the Magnavox pictured is an add on, but they did offer it
in their top custom imperial models.
I collected top line consoles for a number of years and have had Fisher, Scott,Magnavox, Zenith, GE, VM,Silvertone and RCA and the best sounding top models were the Zenith 960 series from the mid to late 60's followed by Scott, Silvertone and VM. The others were quite nice also but not quite as good.
This opinion and comparison is for top of the line models, not mid or lower line.
