A Massive Gas Explosion In NW Baltimore

Damn.

Where was it about 3 years ago? 18 house blew up, all in different locations around a town.

Wasn't that Maryland ?

About 3 years ago we had a guy off himself by filling the house
with natural gas and touching it off while he was talking to his cheating wife
on the phone. I live about a mile as the crow flies from him.
rattled my windows pretty good. went over to see it. the houses on
each side of him were badly damaged and debris was a block away
in every direction. nobody hurt but him.

Update: At least sixteen nearby homes damaged, six people transported from the scene in critical condition. I'm just awed by the response to this. Neighbors helping neighbors they only know in passing. People handing out cold water or offering a shady spot to rest. Local business donating food, water and places to cool off. Rescue teams apparently still searching for survivor(s). Hats off to the first responders. Those guys are out there in full gear in 90 degree plus heat. A whole alphabet list of agencies on the scene.
One person said his mother who lives across the street from the explosion said her front door is now in her kitchen. Looking at the video those are two story houses flattened. The second floor of the end house of the unit is resting against the house next to it 30 feet away. Being familiar with the area I was able to use Google Maps to find images of the houses that were destroyed. This was one heck of a blast

Massachusetts was the last bad one I know of -- and it was horrific (mostly because it was due to a lethal mistake by the utility).

Only one death but lots and lots of property damage -- and a long disruption in gas service to a lot of customers.
Pop Mechanics had a time log story about this one.

Former roommate, my driver, used to work for a nat gas transport company and we would always watch with interest when things like this happen and discuss them. He is not retired, just 'under new management' at home in Whitinsville, MA.

that MA issue was a mess from a major mistake allowing higher pressure in the lines. Folks didn't know why some became fires and other explosions but it was easy to know. Fires when the excess pressure put too much gas into an already burning water heater flame or other examples. Explosions if the overpressure filled a space without an ignition source to between the LEL and UEL and then it got a ignition source like a water heater spark ignitor turning on the heater. boom.
LEL-lower explosive limit
UEL-upper explosive limit.
