A McIntosh Tuner, Is There One In Your System?

I've written before about the issues my MR78 has, especially what Terry said to me. I told him it drifts off the station (and out of stereo mode) during the 1st hour it's on and he said about 20% of the MR78s made have this problem... and on many of them it can't be fixed... at least not reasonably. Even Modafferi said just leave it turned on.

Anyone else have this issue with their MR78?

Just this past summer I dove head first into Mac tube gear with the purchase of my first system........ an MC240, MCD7007, and my tuner/preamp, an MX110. Initially was not thrilled with the MX110, tuner portion. I had some station drift and could not seem to get my tuning eye to get much closure, i.e. not pulling in the stations very well. I sent her off to the TerryMeister and, well, you folks who have ever had Mr. DeWick put his hand on your unit, wait, that didn't sound right, upgrade one of your Macs, knows just how talented he is. My 110 will pull in stations out of Minneapolis, and I am 40 miles southeast of Chicago. So we are talking about 125 miles. Find myself listening to a lot of Chicago stations as well as some from the burbs, since pulling in a station some 50 or more miles away is not a problem. Of course after several weeks of wrangling, I finally got my Brother to put up the dipole antenna on the roof. Boy, that sure helped! Before retiring the Terry-ized 110 for safekeeping, I bought another that had been aligned, etc. by a non-Terry individual. Needless to say, no where near the performance but adequate. Found myself buying another MC240 which I eventually sold, and more recently purchased (2) MR71's which neither have been powered up. I've also added a C22 which is in the process of a power supply upgrade, and its intented use is with my MC240, and MR71 which will be upgraded and aligned. Then, I think I am done. Yeah, right! This weekend I am planning a roadtrip to pick up a complete outfit, MC240, C22, and another MR71. Why, I haven't a clue. I'm one sick puppy! Has anyone with MOCD (Mac Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) ever gone through an intervention?

Yes, I had a MR-71 back in the 80's but sold it when I had some service issues. Purchased a used MX-113 which I used for several years. In 2005 I picked up a MR-85. The 85 is an excellent tuner for both AM & FM. However, I felt that there was something missing in the sound that I remember my old MR-71 had, so I sold it and picked up one owner unit which I had Terry restore. To put it simply, the MR-71 draws you into the music. There is a special magic quality that tubes have which presents music as though it was a live event rather than a recording. When listening to vocal music, it seems like vocalist is performing right in front of you without a microphone and female vocals have that velvety sound that one hears at a live concert. I use the MR-71 daily and marvel at the performance of a 50 year old radio in my music system.
 
For me, a tuner is essential. I have a MR85. Quality is top notch, however I would appreciate to have more options to pre-define stations. I live in an environment with four different official languages plus English. The digital part of the MR88 doesn't work outside US. In Europe we have DAB+ standards. And internet radio would certainly be great. Thus, I'm waiting for the next tuner generation (maybe MR1000).

I've got a TM-1 in my Mx134 but have found myself using the Logitech Squeezbox duet instead of the TM-1 because I'm able to pull in/listen to stations from around the world as well. Anyone interested in a TM-1??:)
 
The MR75 inside the MX117 does a great job, just like the MR73/74 mix inside the MX114 did before it. Have found both to be superior in sonics to the MR78 & MR80 I used previously, but that was a different system, so am going to try another MR80 that has been properly aligned, etc., which my first one may not have been. As ~85% of my listening is to the good FM stations we have around the east coast metroplex (DC - NYC), a good tuner is a requirement. Guess that is why I have a total of eight (8) high-end tuners.

No I didn't. I sold my C45 including Tuner module. But you're right, I did consider to do so. However, offer for the C45 incl. Tuner module was to "convincing" to go for the deal.

i ever hear now two jears sound from the MR78 and it's realy magic what sound's to me ears, now i think over purchase the TM1 for me C45 .. any exchange experiences running here ?

Another voter for the Mr 74. Some have said that it's the next best thing to the Mr78 sound wise, and a properly aligned and serviced unit DX's very well.

Overall it is not fatiguing to listen to on a station thats not running overly compressed audio.

These units can be had and restored for very reasonable prices as opposed to the more favored son, the MR 78.

I have two MR-85 tuners in my systems, and four local radio stations that sound fairly decent. Also have two HD tuners and a Dynalab MD-108. The Macs have better bass reception/response but I prefer the sound of my MD-108, it's really quite remarkable for any tuner to sound this good :yes:
