A new problem today--TEAC 3340S...Help

Thought I was done with my 3340. All back togather. Lets try to record. It was playing back well. Press the "rec" and the red lights lit on the right side and not the left. Then it kicked in. When I tried playing back the left channel was distorted. Thought it might be my old Pioneer QX 4000 bench receiver getting cranky I hooked it up direct bypassing a three tape monitor box. Nope. Put on my 1230 direct and it worked fine. So my test amp and the monitor box are fine.

Heres whats happening now. Playback great on the right side. Rechecked all pots and hookups. No help. When I put the deck on source. Right channel is good. Left is distorted. Playback a tape, right channel is good, left is distorted. Now when recording, the right light comes on but the left record light does not. Noticed when you put it in 4 channel right rear came on and right does not. When I started this afternoon all rec lights came on.

What gives? Now I am in deeper than I have been on one of these beasts. There was a lot of dust and dirt inside. Looks like it sat a long time. While not versed in circuitry, it appears that a relay the kicks in record is possibly hanging up and is stuck between play and record. Seen mechanical switches on cassette decks do this.

Any suggestions would be great. Looks like it maybe time to get a manual....Eric:tears:

Could be the relay. Usually Teac list it as 'K-401' on the record or bias board. One side for the record light, the other side of the relay for signal. I would pull the relay and clean it.
Hope this helps.

looks like I need the manual...

I pulled the bottom panel and there are a lot of "relays" on this deck. and layers of boards. Where is this particalar relay??

Eric:scratch2:

The Record Relay is on the Bias Oscillator board. It's located behind the bottom cover. It's the only relay on the bottom boards.

Pss.. check the sync board first..it was broken right ?
Check the wires going to that board and clean the 4 switches.. should take care of the L-channel problem Eric.:scratch2:

Its back--sort of,

Took a look at it tonight and it played on both channels and gradually the left channel got distorted. Did not get as bad as last night. Let it sit as I wanted to test the owner of the SX 1980 receivers turntable. Went back to the TEAC and figured why not try recording. Both channels came on. Last night the left channel did not kick in.

Ran out of time and I am beat. Got my portable XM unit on its indoor cradle so I can tune any FM set in the house to it. Its on the 60's at 6. time for some ZZZZ's :boring: Put on the Zenith Transoceanic 3000 and hit the rack. Sadly its at a point where your guess is as good as mine:scratch2:

Sounds like a bad transistor. Get a can of componet cooler. Spray the transistors on the board. When the channel returns to normal operation, you located the defective part.
