A new "Word" question

DaveElton

A Whiter Shade Of Pale
Hey all, this pops into my head every so often, and since it is now 3:24 am, well, it did again. I know we have some very keen minds here, and I am wondering if any of you have heard of, or seen this word used. "Reclude" Unless my memory is totaly foggy, I "swear" that I used to see this word being used on freeway signs in either Michigan or Ohio. For example "Exit ahead, reclude speed" Anyone else familier with this usage? Thanks!

sure you didn't mean reduce? Or maybe that's what it was but you had something else on your mind and it played a trick on you.

Well, I have wondered that as well. In every other instance I remember seeing the word "reduce" speed ahead, but for some weird reason, the other word "reclude" sticks in my mind from long ago. MMM, I wonder if Dad's '65 Barracuda had an exhaust leak in the back where I used to ride quite often??:scratch2:

Sign was probably painted on Friday afternoon. Or someone tagged the sign and separated the loop on the "d".

I didn't know they had freeways in fluidic space, what a concept!

:D Well, I didn't want to give myself away by refering to them as "Trans-Warp Conduits":alien: :)

Seem to remember Michigan road signs that alerted motorists to 'resume' speed. Like 'construction ended, resume speed' or similar. Don't remember reclude. I was a word freak as a kid and remember my dad driving on two-lane curvy (and beautiful) back country lake roads all over Michigan. Kids can be quite literal and it confused me when he drove right on past the signs stating Do Not Pass.

The FHWA engineers who govern the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) can probably answer your Q re: reclude, http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/

Preclude maybe ?....:scratch2:

pre·clude/priˈklo͞od/
Verb:

Prevent from happening; make impossible.

Of course, if ding-dong Sarah Palin can make up "refutiate," who am I to argue with traffic engineering practices in your area?

Exactly. You "mere mortals" need to keep in your place, and accept whatever's written as the TRUTH (even if you know it's wrong). :D ;)

"Reclude" is not a word; no mention of it in any dictionaries. The closest in spelling would be preclude, include, recuse, and recluse. More than likely the word you saw was "reduce." Of course, if ding-dong Sarah Palin can make up "refutiate," who am I to argue with traffic engineering practices in your area?

Reclude is listed in the online dictionaries.
