A Northern Michigan Introduction

I thought I check this place out. That other place is getting a bit mean. My internet speed is terrible, so I live with vinyl, flac and DSD. When the stars align, I can bring in Tidal. I am semi retired and have very eclectic tastes in music. I am a big fan of contemporary classical, large ensemble jazz and I like to explore new music rather than relive the tunes of my past. So, I am just another two channel stereo guy.

Hopefully I posted this in the correct place. Any other audiophile in Northern Michigan?

I am just 30 min south of the bridge. I am listening to Adam Schoenberg American Symphony with the Kanas City Orchestra. Even if you do not like classical, you got to check it out. I just stumbled into this guy this evening.

Hello from the other end of the state, but from another explorer of new music.

What 'large ensemble jazz' do you enjoy?
 
Welcome! I lived in the UP back in the early 60s in Marquette, Negaunee and Munising under the "Pedro Pan" program which probably nobody in here knows what it is. Beautiful place, made a lot of good friends in High School. What town are you from?

Welcome! "Large ensemble jazz", hmmm? I'll recommend "The Hoops McCann Band Plays The Music Of Steely Dan". MCA, available on CD & vinyl. Should be right in your wheelhouse.

I want to be careful and not use the phrase "big band" which may be a turn off for a lot of people. Loads of good things have happened after Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich. Fortunately the art form of the big band appears to be still alive.

Lately I have been trolling the North Texas 1 o'clock Jazz band. Nothing like vinyl with good engineering and over the top musicianship.

For new modern classical:
Max Ritcher Vivaldi, the Four Seasons recomposed
Hans Zimmer
Johann Johannsson (died way too young)
Nils Frahm

Bottom line.... Seems like a lot of audiophiles are living in the past, reliving their memories. Nothing wrong with that, but there is really good stuff out there that is very good and that needs our support.

What new and interesting tunes are you guys listening too?

Thanks... I am off to discogs and will check it out. Looks like Woody Herman also did a tribute album with some of my favorite musicians. I will check that out as well.

I am from Ohio and moved up to Northern Michigan when I found out what the sky, air and lake(s) are really supposed to look like!!! When I was a kid, I spent my summer at Interlochen which was my first introduction to Northern Michigan. I worked up in Munising for the July 4th weekend two years ago. For some reason I thought it would be quiet, boy was I wrong. I am still trying to pronounce "Munising" correctly.
