A phono cartridge/ phono stage combination that 'doesn't' work.

G'day well, I can almost understand why some people think that the M97xE can sound really dull because I've just done it!

I've just plugged in my recently purchased ANT Kora 3T into my Radio Shack system with my M97xE at 47 k with approximately the correct capacitance loading, yet it sounds like a wet blanket over the speakers. Well maybe not quite that bad, but nearly. It's a horrible combination. Very dull!

Back to the ESP P06 at 62 k! Actually it still sounds pretty good at 47 k. However the ANT Kora 3T just doesn't like the M97xE at all. Yuk! Regards, Felix aka catman.

G'day mate, with the SAS stylus on the M97xE yes it sounds great, but not with the OEM elliptical stylus. Regards, Felix aka catman.

G'day all, I admit that I was somewhat bemused that the highly regarded ANT Kora 3T phono stage sounded so horrid with the 'stock' Shure M97xE, but later I wondered about 'synergy' and whether it might sound better with a diffrent cartridge.

Although it's getting a bit late now I'm wondering if it might sound good with the AT95E which tends to sound slightly 'brightish' and 'cool' with my ESP P06.

I'll try it tomorrow if I get a chance. It might be interesting. :scratch2: I'll post my observations. Regards, Felix aka catman.

I must be fooling myself!

G'day all...because I've just had another listen to my M97xE/ANT Kora 3T phono stage combination, and it sounds fine, and nowhere as 'rolled off' as it sounded yesterday.

I simply cannot explain this apparent difference! I must be fooling myself! :D Regards, Felix aka catman.

Burn in?

G'day mate, I don't know. :scratch2: I guess it's possible. Have you ever experienced this? Regards, Felix aka catman.

I don't know about burn in.......sometimes it takes caps a long time to settle in. My pre doesn't have an on-off switch for this very reason. And I leave my power amp on 24/7 for the same reason. It( if shut off a while) doesn't sound right for about an hour.

There is nothing surpricing about it, it is just how our brain works. That is one of the reasons that we need to listen blindly and have references with us to have a clue how things sound. It´s nothing new. It is a fundamental truth that we cannot trust our ears if we know what we are listening to.

Although, my wife will be unaware of the "situation", she hears something is amiss and always comments on it. Most recently I posted about this in another forum. Which is why she is always my final say before I ship something out that I've worked on.

If by unaware of the 'situation' You mean she doesn´t know what she is listening to and what You have done, it´s reasonable she is less biased.

G'day all, although I'm somewhat lacking motivation today, I have managed to install one of my AT95E's and check it out with my ANT Kora 3T phono stage and it does mate well!

The slightly dark sound of the ANT nicely tempers the slightly bright/cool sound of the AT95E, and the overall sound is very nice and well balanced. In fact, it almost sounds like my DIY ESP P06 with my M97xE at 62 k loading! Who says synergy isn't real? I think it is. :D Regards, Felix aka catman.
