A pretty good & cheap pocketknife

We've had some good knife discussions here in the past, so I thought I'd share one of my latest acquisitions with 'yall! I picked up a Colombia River Knife and Tool "Tuition" from REI's site last week. It's listed on their "outlet" section where they close out gear for cheap prices, and I got it for around $25. I'm a fan of sheepsfoot blades, so I was immediately drawn to it. I got the half serrated edge. The serrations are OK, they haven't worn well so far, but it's a solid and useful tool. It's replacing my previous daily carry, and so far it's been up to the task. Best part is that for the price I'm comfortable using/abusing it. When I priced out Spyderco's that I'd want to carry I came to the realization that I'd be getting a collector's piece, not a knife I'd be comfortable using every day.

(For the record, I don't own CRKT or REI. I'm just a satisfied customer of both.)

What locking mechanism does it use? Looks to be a liner lock. Is there a spring assist on the open? (Prefer there isn't)

Liner lock, no spring assist. I prefer a lockback, but the liner seems to be quite sturdy so far. Like you, I prefer no spring assist.

Opinel #8

I don't often carry a pocket knife, but when I do the 3 1/4" blade on this medium duty Opinel comes in handy. I think I paid $14 about 20 years ago. I don't think the prices haven't changed much.

I carry a well-used 70's Camillus, N.Y. #4 lockback.
Heavy brass bolsters with a 3 1/2" SS blade.

I still carry a SpyderCo Co-Pilot or Cricket. Both were pretty inexpensive. I used to live in Golden, CO and I could go by their outlet store, which was nice. I like a nice small folder with a clip and a one-hand open. The Co-Pilot has a serrated edge; great for cutting through seat belts and webbing.

^The Opinel's are your classic hippie rock climber knife. Utilitarian to the Nth degree, but cheap enough to lose or leave at the base.

The wood handle makes them unthreatening enough to carve an apple in the security line at JFK. But don't try this unless you dig handcuffs.

Many have resin stains on the tip.

I also like a small folder with a clip and one-handed open. Hence my Opinel stays in my "kid bag" to be ready for snack duty, and my CRKT stays clipped to my pocket. I also am appreciating an easier one-handed close, my one complaint about lockbacks. I think I still prefer a lockback overall, tho. The "lock" on the Opinel makes me pretty sure I'd eventually lose a finger doing something inadvisable with it if I carried it daily! I also don't regularly carry a knife over 3 inches for political, social, image, and comfort reasons. ;)

Are you trying to make a point? I wonder what it is.... Maybe you're trying to tell me that the Internet is full of trolls! Thanks!

I apologize.
I still stand by what I said. Maybe to you $25 for a pocketknife is "cheap". Not to some folks. No offense meant.:thmbsp:

Your original point was that the knives in question weren't "cheap", so they must be "good"? I didn't get that at all.

I just wanted to have a nice chat about hobbies and pocketknives and some comradery, but you seem incapable of that. I wish you'd go away.

Okay!

I'm a big fan of CRKT knives, I've bought 5 so far. The small M16 (drop point) is my EDC, and a Lake Design Bandera as my "dress" knife. I also carry Leatherman/Gerber tools for work, but I can't be without my knife. :thmbsp:
