Met an awesome AK member yesterday, Sonance'84. This cat is a true AK kinda guy and just an all around cool cat. :thmbsp:

He hipped me to an estate sale he was going to and gave me a call while I was stuck at work to let me know what was there. The thing that makes this/him so very cool is he let me in on the deal. He could have very easily taken all the stuff for himself but was KIND enough to share. Very cool considering we had only PM'd each other a few times and talked on the phone once.

The vinyl he hipped me to was an incredilble SCROE! in and of it's self but that's for another thread.

To get to the point while on the phone he said there's a little Dynaco amp here that does not work. He asked the price, which to me was more than fair and then secured the little amp for me.

Here it is. A factory wired Dynaco ST35

Any thoughts and/or ideas from you folks on making this the most it can be?

Much thanks to Sonance'84 for being cool enough to "share the wealth". Looking forward to many listening sessions and amp building, fixin, tweekin' in the future.

Always cool to meet local AK members. :thmbsp: :music: :music:

I would think there is a good change thats all it is, but t looks like those traces don't go anywhere? is that section for bias voltage testing? Id say a very through inspection of the boards, lots of cleanup on them and a recap/reresistor is in order. as a start, and have the tubes checked if you can. Is the ST-35 as rare as ive read? not the STA-35 mind you.

If you don't yank the iron off that and build a custom using the DIY board, I'll burn your house down with you in it. (I will of course get Mother and Child out of harms way).:smoke:

I agree with Jay that there's some good iron there. However, working good ST-35s get stupid money sometimes. Rarer than the 70, and considered by some to be the best sounding Dynaco power amp. Yours has a cage, too. Might be worth investigating some options to rehab it on it's current chassis.

To that end, your broken PCB is interesting. It looks to me that the broken part basically has provisions for the 2 black wires and a ceramic cap. If that's all there is, then it should work even if it was broken off. What might be a worst case scenario from that type of thing tho would be having the broken piece make contact with the chassis, or the PCB it broke off of. Then I'm sure you'd start zapping stuff in short order. The people selling new production Dynaco kits might just sell you one or two PCBs that should fit the original chassis.

Also, what do you mean by "not working"? Were you told that, or did you observe that? Is the fuse blown, or have you tried to fire it up and found that it blows fuses?

Thanks for the thoughts guys.

I was considering the Dynakit replacement boards but didn't know if there were stock size upgrades.

Jay, I saw those boards from Shanon and was thinking the same thing but was not sure if I should pull this one apart. I gues I could just put the chassis and that in a box and save it if I ever needed to put it back together.

Now you've got me thinking this is really the best route to go.

Squid, I have not tried to power this unit up yet. I was told by the seller it did not work. I checked the fuse and it looks good. Might be time to put it on the variac and see if she comes up.

This was all only possible due to the kindness of another AK'r. That wheel is spinnin'

You've heard my little chrome and wood amp haven't you Paul? It is all ST35 iron with the DIY board. I have easily received more compliments on the sound of that amp than any other. You can also add a triode switch very easily with that board, or of course run UL. The boards were 42 bucks last time I checked and they are super thick, and double traced (both sides). You could also do what I did and add a seperate filament TX for the power tubes and run 10BQ5s pr 8BQ5s which makes running NOS very affordable.

Doing a bit of price checking on the DIY board, the parts and a chassis.

Any thought or tips from folks who have built these on parts and that?

hey-Hey!!!,
The St.35 is almost a great amp. It needs a bit more power supply capacity, and to go with that a PS filter with a choke. If you could find another 774 power trans, building a cute pair of monoblocks would be sweet. There are many offerings of PS filter chokes that would serve a monoblock easily and not take up much room.

Once that's all done, then you may wish to upgrade the input/phase splitter circuitry.
cheers,
Douglas

Hey, thanks for the kind words Paul and Loren! It's definitely cool to meet new AK members. I didn't realize the ST-35 was such a good little amp and probably should have made it my first DIY project to learn the in's and out's, but I'm sure I'll find a nice project that's not too technical at some point.

I find it funny that I want an EL84 based amp, but I've bought and immediately sold two of them. :screwy:

Good luck on whatever you decide to do...I expect a demonstration upon completion. :beerchug:

We'll get ya a good EL84 amp one way or another. You may just have to settle for a completed one at first:thmbsp: :D
