A Tannoy HPD/315 questions

I posted over in D&S about a pair of Tannoy dual concentric loudspeakers I am going to have re-coned. You may want to read what's there.

I'd like to hear what AK'ers know about this speaker.

I got a pair of Cheviot speakers. I hear that making a 4 cubic foot aperiodic cabinet improves the sound of this loudspeaker.

I also wonder what anyone knows about the crossover. I could just replace caps, but is there a improvement that can be made? Maybe the crossover point gets moved when the 4 CF cabinet is used? Type of caps?

I know they need recapping. When I switch crossovers between loudspeakers, one crossover has no highs.

Justrideit - Hi, be aware that you have the later and improved HPD315A as printed on your rear terminal plate. These use a different low pass coil to the earlier models.

There is a lot of bad information around about the value of the inductors on various models. People have posted drawings from Tannoy that have been marked up with the wrong values. This has been proven by many people whos coils, when measured, do not match the drgs but are all miraculously the same value.

If you just swap out the caps and resistors for Sonicap Gen I's and Mills MRA12 1% then I can recomend you will get a great improvement accross the spectrum. Much more detail, better deeper bass and cleaner top end.

If you bypass the treble controls this will give an improvement as the tired dirty switches do not make for good sound. Just hard wire them at the level settings. I also went as far as removing the driver multi plug, fitted better cable and soldered it direct to the driver contacts.

The optimum volume for this driver in a ported enclosure is 150 litres tuned to about 35Hz.
