A Yamaha 610-II for $320?!

I have had some dealings with Ezekiel in the past. IMO, he considers each cap or component to be an individual upgrade, and charges a lot for his stuff. Did you see the Kenwood KT-8300 he supposedly sold for over $1000?

No, I missed that one! But to consider each cap or component an individual upgrade is a bit much, I think. I'm not surprised then. Sheesh. Thanx, Aaron.
Tom

I should mention that he is a very pleasant guy to deal with, if a bit on the high side. But, that is his call, and his gear seems to sell, if not within hours of listing.

This is Ezekiel and I do not understand what the problem is with what I do? If you remove a lessor part and put in a better part what would you call that or how would you describe the work. If you check my work compared to others my prices are very cheap. Most I have found charge a large price for audio path upgrades and that is only a few part changes, where as I do almost a complete upgrade of the bigger caps, both ec and film. It was not hear say for the 8300 it is fact, I do not lie.

I have to take a nudie shot of my 610 II tonight. IIRC, its so empty inside that you probably have enough room for 320 $1 bills to be stuffed inside! :scratch2:

That said, it is a nice little tuner...

The 610II I sold and the customer loves it is not a tuner, but a integrated amp. I don't use regular electronic store parts but parts that are better than what was used when new. You should check the prices of parts and what I actually do. Not one of my customers have been nothing but very happy. This is one of the remarks from the new owner: "yes the amp arrived in great shape and my son is very happy with it!" I understand that some people think my prices are very high, but I wish they would check the prices of Blackgates, Elna's, MultiCaps and on and on and then the time involved. I am sorry you think my work is not worth the money I charge. Email some of my customers and see what they tell you, if you are truly interested.

I'm not necessarily saying it's not worth the money. What I'm saying is that it's a bit too rich for my blood, sir. With gear this old (1970's), I'd be happy just to have it running properly with standard parts, never mind "upgraded". I wouldn't be able to hear any difference, anyhow. No offense meant; if any was taken, I'm sorry.
Tom

Sorry, my bad - somehow I saw '610 II' and immediately thought tuner. Probably because I've recently got mine out of storage.

Anyways, for anyone who might have been 'intrigued' by my assertion that the CT-610 II is mostly empty inside, I've attached a nudie I took tonight.

Even though it is virtually empty, I confirmed that it is a pretty nice little tuner, with reasonable sensitivity.

I have been completely intrigued by your auctions, and if I didn't already have all the equipment I needed and know a wonderful tech who lives close to me, I would have bought a unit from you.

Your prices are generous, more than reasonable, for what the vintage enthusiast is actually getting. A unit from you will probably last 20 years if not abused, its hard to put a price on that.

Cheers, keep up the good work! :thmbsp:

The CA-610II is a nice amp, but it just isn't the same as the superior CA-810. I think that I would spend my "upgrade" money on an 810.

No problem, guys. I am not upset and yes, I upgraded a 810 and it is a much better unit but then the price goes up because of the number of upgraded parts. I try very hard to be as fair as I can be and still stay in business and believe me it is hard to do at the prices I charge. That is why most Tech's have went to audio path upgrades with average parts, the time and cost of parts is getting crazy. Now with this new RoHs requirement we all might be in trouble because the caps are going up and some are going out. BAD! Thanks, for the kind words. I will try to help anyone I can just let me know.

actually I for one am happy that there are still people out there to repair our 20 + yr old equipment so we can listen to our beloved vintage stuff because we all know what the altenative is

Am I missing something? You take out a stock cap and replace it with a stock cap, just another brand and this is an upgrade? So if I take out AC Delco sparkplugs in my car and put in NGKs, it is an upgrade. Do I now have a modded vehicle that if I do not tell my insurance company it could breach my contract. There is a difference between a repair, a replacement an upgrade and a mod and subbing brand A for brand B is a substitute for me and neither an upgrade or a mod.

I think we are losing sight of these differences and purposely smearing them so there can be false selling statements.

I'm assuming that there's a big difference in price with replacement caps that are of slightly better to noticeably better quality than the caps that were initially used as stock, and Black Gates. Black Gates, if I recall from previous experience, is quite an increase in price, and depending on who you talk to, add an additional, performance improvement, arguably slight to a quite noticeable improvement.

In regards to cars, remember when Splitfire sparkplugs came out? They had the forked tip? They were four times as expensive because of that forked, increased tip/contact point. They were worth additional horsepower, but that was lots of dough for spark plugs!

As for caps, new caps can be had for reasonable prices, and seem to be an improvement than the originals, and there's work involved, so there will be a cost for that upgrade. Add Black gates caps, I can only assume the cost will skyrocket, with slight to hearty performance increase.

I guess when it comes to Black Gates caps, it's improvement, yes, but at a premium cost.

when the time comes, I'll cap with non-Black Gates caps, save some $$$, and still experience a performance gain.

If I hit the Lotto however, then I'll consider Black Gates.

The analogy would be, if you took out old spark plugs that no longer function, or have lost their gap spec, and replaced them with new ones that are better than original, you would have an upgrade.

If you replace caps/ resistors/ trim pots that are not working/ have leaked/ are not functional with new ones better than the originals, you have an upgrade.

You're not comparing oragnges to oranges, modern spark plugs pretty much don't wear out, but vintage amplifier/tuner parts certainly do, and when you replace them with new parts (not necessarily of the same value) they sound better.

Actually, in the 1st 2 instances you have either a replacement or repair depending on if the parts are malfunctioning or only out of spec. When is the last time you brought your car in for a 100K upgrade.

As for replacement caps being better than the originals, the only way to determine that would be to somehow find an original unit where the original parts are also new. If I have a 5 year old TOTL tire that has gone beyond its natural life and replace it with a $25 bottom of the line tire, the $25 tire may function better as the TOTL tire no longer operates within its original specification but it does not mean the $25 is a better tire, only that it is operating within its spec and as a result may be better.

Brian, I wish I had a time machine to go back and do so. I'd also see if I could sneak back a bunch of great gear to share with my AKers- wonder if I could equip a 1-ton pickup to go back in time, instead of a DeLorean?

As for the caps that were used in gear 25-30 years ago, my guess is that the materials in modern caps are of better quality?

Maybe not however- anyone have proof if this is the case? are the components, materials of modern caps of a better quality? Do modern caps last longer? Are they more stable? Less prone to leak? More Durable?

Or are they of lesser quality- compromised componentry, lesser-quality build, ect?

My guess is, that modern caps benefit from better design and better materials.

another car analogy- the best tires of 35 years ago were bias-ply- radials are an improvement, I'd feel strongly to argue, and the technology to build run-flat tires is a step for progress. Also, tire compounds have improved greatly.

Whether or not all new tires benefit of that improved design and improved compound materials is another thing. Surely the $25 economy tire is going to be of the cheapest material, while some big-buck soft-compound Bridgestones, Michelins, or Pirellis are going to be of improved design, materials, and performance. Maybe the Black Caps of the tire world, no?

If it is a better sparkplug then you upgraded it, yes. Just like if you buy a car and get a better radio they call it a upgrade. Upgrade and mod are two different things and I would not lie for money. Even MacDonald's let you upgrade their food combo's. Why are you so bitter, calling people liars and cheats that you know nothing about?

"Am I missing something?" - kindness
