ABBA maybe 1st music video, NOT video killed the radio star

I've discovered a few cool sites to relive my youth. ABBA Maybe had the 1st music video"Take a chance on me" 1977,------------ "video killed the radio star" was probaly for 1st for MTV for America in 1981.


I recently donated some old albulms I listened to once in a while. One of my favorite 70's bands is ABBA.

They had a huge hit from their album "Take a chance on me" from 1977.

ABBA shot a music video to promote this song and or album. You can find this video easily on You Tube. This video has early video techniques and shot very well, definetly a music video, even if shot later in 1978 an extremely early music video--earlier than other song claimed as first music video made around 1981(video killed the radio star.)

Does anyone know truly the first music video? The cinematography is awesome and halo softened portraits done along with time lapse. They pushed the boundries to make ABBA a great video. Watch this and realize this IS the first real music video ----- if not one of the first for sure!!!!

further video browsing supports ABBA was the first group to grasp the music video artfully.

Waterloo from 1974 -- using overhead shot techniques and Mama Mia from 1975 are music videos shot w/ white backgrounds for probale later TV viewing.

Knowing me, Knowing you from 1976 is a definite --dedicated artfully made music video that was explicity made as a music video using several video techniques.

Name of the Game from 1977 is definite music video using sepia and color techniques w/ flipping portrait shots of all band members.


ABBA's band members, promoter and or manager or creative consultants are the pioneers of the modern music video- who ever came up w/ this idea. They have an extensive lists of their hits from the 1970's shot in music video format, someone should recognize them as the first music band to embrace this artistic method.

If a music video is defined as a short film with a music soundtrack, then the first is the Dickson Experimental Sound Film (circa 1894). It is the first known film with live recorded sound and features William Dickson playing a violin.

Since many contemporary music "videos" are originally shot on film, the term cannot be defined by the original medium (videotape, film, etc.)
 
Pooh - Magical Mystery Tour certainly has ABBA and Buggles beat, hands down!
 
Music videos were certainly around before ABBA, MTV, and so forth. They simply caled them "Promo Films." Fair to say MTV and Michael Jackson revolutionized the medium, but they certainly did not invent it.
 
Actually the first music videos were available in the format called Scopitones that was available in the late 50' to the mid 60's and was ahead of MTV by 20 years. These were jukebox type players that would play music videos on 16mm film. They were more popular in Europe than in the US. My favorites are Neil Sedaka Calendar Girl, Nancy Sinatra These Boots are Made For Walking, Joi Lansing Web of Love and Bobby Vee The Night Has A Thousand Eyes. The Beatles, Cream, other 60s bands made short music videos with story content. Just think if MTV was around during Beatles era!

First videos I remember seeing on MTV were Adam Ant, ABC, Bowie ("Ashes to Ashes"), Pat Benatar. The special effects were really embarrassing back then.
 
The first music video was not "Video Killed The Radio Star". It was just the first video MTV played when they went live.
 
And let us not forget The Monkees. Several musical videos with enough plot to make it seem to be reasonable that they'd be playing them.
 
In 1963, Jan & Dean produced a promotional film for "Surf City." They sang and acted out the lyrics in live action at various beach locations -- a true music video long before ABBA or The Buggles.

Now, for bonus points: What was the second music video played on MTV? (no Googling)
