Hi Guys,

Im new here in AK. I am planning to do a recap on my sansui 2000x. I read that i also need to replace tranny's 2SC458's (due to noise issues bec of age) on the tone control board (6 of them?) what do you guys recommend? same or better substitute? Also while recapping, do i need to replace the 2SC793's (4 of them)?

any info is appreciated!!

thanks,

C

I have a Sansui 2000x that I found upside down in gravely mud at the dump. I figured it might be a basket case, but it cleaned up nicely. I think they tossed it because the dial lamps were out. Checked for value and loss, there was not a single bad capacitor in it, so Sansui used decent parts. That doesn't mean you do or don't have a bad part in your unit, and you may not agree with my philosophy on the matter, but at least consider the ideas here.

If you use substitutes, replace ALL the transistors on the tone board or you will have balance issues.

The large caps in most units are well sealed and don't dry out usually. The little ones are nasty sometimes. Replace all the sub 2uF units with modern film equivalents...they increase reliability and lower distortion.

thanks, Conrad. I will keep that in mind. Some of the caps on the chassis have bulges on top..so i have made up my mind to do a recap. How far do i need to do it?..i dont have any experience which ones are critical to replace...

from what i read i start with the ff:

tone control board
driver amp block
caps on the chassis, C003,004,821 &822 (still available? )
trannys, 2sc458, 2sc793

My goal was to make it sound new again, at least try to..please make suggestions

thanks,
C

thanks, Hardware: what about the 2Sc793's? do replace them , since i get them out already?

If you have exposed metal tops with bulging, those need to go now! If it's just the plastic disks, push down on them to see where the metal is. It's pretty common for the plastic disks to go a bit round, but it doesn't mean anything. Is there any evidence of transistor problems (trannys usually refers to transformers)? Noise or some tone control strangeness?

BTW, that receiver has a remarkably good tuner section, assuming it's still properly aligned.

thanks, conrad. I noticed that the tone is a bit off? flaky?

Indeed, if you have any bulging caps...be they bulging from the top or the bottom gasket, they MUST go. They can fail shorted, and this can have (and usually does have!) disastrous effects.

If you have the tone board transistors out, you might as well change them. They are a weak spot in these units. They get noisy. If you change one, change the rest to retain balance....they're cheap.

There's a transistor with a circular heatsink on one of the underside power boars. If this dies, you will lose preamp power. This power transistor may fail when new caps are installed. The inrush current of the lower ESR replacements can send this unit over the edge if the transistor is marginal. It usually fails open. This isn't too critical in regards to replacement. Just match polarity (I think its NPN) and equal or greater current and voltage and you'll be good.

2sc793 TO-3 npn 100v 7a 60w 30-200hfe 9mhz

Mouser replacement--
863-MJ21194G npn to-3 250v 16/30A 250W 8-75hfe 4mhz $4.23

2sc793 TO-3 npn 100v 7a 60w 30-200hfe 9mhz

Mouser replacement--
863-MJ21194G npn to-3 250v 16/30A 250W 8-75hfe 4mhz $4.23

thanks Avionic. Im assuming those are direct substitute parts. What do you use for heatsink (solution, silicone? white stuff?) on the output transistor.

thanks, again!!

i am not sure on who are the experts on this, project so far i am planning on recapping the ff:

tone control board
driver amp block
caps on the chassis, C003,004,821 &822 (still available? )
transistors, 2sc458, 2sc793 (necessary???)

Echowars or anyone who has done recaps on 2000x , pls chime in if i am on the right track on this one. If not pls do tell what i need to do..

thanks!!!
