AC 8 Track player never used

Greetings all.

I have a 110/120v AC Akai 8 Track Cartridge Deck, Model CR-83D, Serial No. 40222-00571, that has never been used. Box has been opened, but deck has never been out of the plastic bag or foam packing frame. In addition to playing cartridges, it can record from a mic or from any external audio source.

Includes all original literature, operating manual, etc. Made in Japan, purchased at Reliable Home Appliance, Beltsville, MD in 1981.

Anybody know how much it might be worth?

OK. Now you're in the right place.

There are those who will say "It's an 8 track, just forget it." But....it's an Akai, which most consider the best unit made within the confines of the format. But...in the lineup of Akai 8 tracks, the 83 is mostly considered nowhere near the equal of the 80/81/82 series. It's a completely different design, with a DC motor that can't equal the large AC motor in the others. It's also known to have the typical noisy transistors endemic to most Akais.

I've seen 83s sell mostly beween $50 and $100 these days, where the others have sold for much more. It depends on the operating condition (an unknown in your case), the selling venue, and for all I know the phases of the moon. If I were in your place I'd be happy with a hundred bucks, but you could get luckier.

Thanks much for the info, and the link. Apparently there is a fan base for the earlier models, but the fact that mine is new old stock should work in its favor, if only as a reserve backup.
