Acoustic Energy AE3 suitable amplifier

Hi all

My friend has a set of Acoustic Energy AE3 speakers and is looking for a suitable amp for them. The one he has has failed not sure of the make and model of that one, must find out.

As far as we can tell the speakers are rated at 250W rms.
He was looking at some Naim amplifers but most were rated at 70/80 watts per channel, which is far from ideal rating wise.

This is just for a living room set up so no need for huge volume.

Would anyone have any suggestions?

The Acoustic Energy speakers are extremely power hungry and not easy to drive. You are looking at needing a lot of high current power. 130 watts/channel minimum. Bryston or roughly similar is recommended.

The Naim stuff will work wonderfully. I've heard that combo and it was very nice. I'd still like a pair of AE1s. One of these days.

Just because a speaker is rated to 250 Watts doesn't mean that's how much power you should feed it. For all practical purposes that's a maximum rating. However, in reality speaker wattage ratings are pretty much worthless and useless. With WPC more power is almost always better.
