Acutex 312 Stylus info?

I was thinking the same thing. Always good to have a choice of headshell weights to match whatever cartridge falls outa the sky.

Hey John and anyone else that has the Saturn Headshell, is this crack on the headshell going to be a problem for me to adjust the overhang etc?

Ouch! That sucks!

I think the only way it would affect the overhang (or azimuth) adjustment is if the crack prevented you from adequately tightening the screw, resulting in movement between the actual headshell and the barrel. It might resonate too.

Is that the one that came with the M320? :tears:

Well, the M320 is broken too lol. It was dirt cheap on ebay, I figured I could repair the saturn headshell worse case, maybe save the 320 for a retip one day etc.

I think the headshell should be usable as long as I can still adjust overhang. Im hoping I can use "mighty putty" or something to that extent to fill in the crack

Jeeze! That's rotten luck!

JB Weld might be the stuff to use on the headshell. It's metalized to begin with. :)

k well I'm going to take a chance on the broken saturn headshell and M320 stylus.
Thanks for the JB Weld recommendation, I think I will actually try it.

If the M320 works, it'll be another to add to my Acutex collection, btw the Acutex standard headshell and LPM 315 I got earlier are just fine, haven't mounted it for critical listening yet.

The LPM 312 is my go to and the 415 well, I will try to get it to play nice some day in the near future.

I can't bring myself to begin again rotating my other cartridges through the system. Got a lotta good ones gathering dust right now.

For some reason, the end of this sentence disappeared. I also mentioned that JB Weld can be used to repair engine blocks, is machinable and is gray like the Saturn V headshell.

OK so the package arrived, with the Saturn V. As far as I can tell, the crack in the headshell is not a dealbreaker.

It's currently on the lowest distance overhang adjustment, and thanks to some tweaking with rubber gaskets, it should be able to reach 52mm if necessary (it's actually perfectly on at 50mm right now, which is what my Denon takes)

Now. Onto the M320 STR III that was included. The cantilever does have a dent, but it is straight, and the diamond doesn't look too mangled, but it's impossible to tell without a microscope / playing a throwaway record.

As for the dent, I've used cantilevers with more dents before and it doesn't always mean the stylus is toast. It's not a full crumple, just a dent so we'll see.

here's a pic of the stylus up close. Fingers crossed that the stylus is at least good for a few spins.. Just to say that I have and have heard the top of the LPM series :music:

Good luck! Let us know how that thing sounds.

I have yet to try the 312 in my Saturn V and have removed my 210 II E from it and put it in a regular headshell. The microphonics were untamable, or at least Blu Tack didn't tame them.

John

John, are you getting audible microphonics from your 312, or did the Blu-Tack fix that problem?

I never had microphonics with that one. I used Blu Tack prophylactically because I don't like how loosely the stylus fits the body.

That's not the problem with the 200 series LPMs. The styli fit the bodies very securely. Where I had a problem was with the fit of the cartridge in the headshell socket. It appeared secure but, over time, the cartridge would loosen and headshell would become increasingly "live". Simply pressing the cartridge back in the headshell had no effect. It was necessary to remove and re-seat the cartridge in the headshell.

I haven't read other reports of this problem so it may be peculiar to my Saturn V or my 200 series body. At some point I suppose I ought to mount my 312 in the Saturn V and see if the problem arises there or not.

Both of my LPMs, the M210 II E and the M312 III STR are mounted in Technics "Type 1" headshells and perform just fine so it has to be either the Saturn V headshell or the fit of the 210 in the Saturn V headshell.

Well sadly I tried the 320 and although it played, it was dead and lifeless sounding. No big loss, I'm able to use the Saturn v and the cartridge that came along with the package.

Oddly enough the NOS 312 I bought from the Italian eBayer had a massive channel imbalance (which I was able to measure via Audacity on my computer) I used the 320 cartridge to replace it. I know it wasn't an alignment issue because swapping the cart and 312 stylus didn't require any mounting changes.

I then went on a crusade to measure my other carts and found some interesting channel imbalance results.... But that's for another thread ;)

Belatedly [always!] I've been listening to my LPM 312 STR III and it is indeed an excellent little cartridge. 'Lively' was my first impression. Good solid phantom center channel too, which is important for the soundstages. Passes the sibilants tracking torture test at 1.5g.

Thinking about getting another one, y'know, for safety.

Have a look at the upper part of the cantilever under a magnifying glass. The left -right poles(at 90 degrees to each other) which form the x-y axis at the top of the cantilever may not be equidistant from the left - right magnetically induced poles in the cartridge body. I had a similar problem on a used akai pc-100.
Using a toothpick and a LOT of patience was able to rotate the cantilever about it's z axis slightly by pushing gently on the upper part of the cantilever pole that was furthest away from the induced magnetic pole in the cartridge body.

Me too! I've had it in my watch list waiting for the seller to put them on sale. He has a boatload of them, over 100 I think, and is only selling about 1 a month so you'd think he'd mark them down. :dunno:
