One difference for sure is that the GTP-500II has a moving coil cartridge input and the original doesnt.
I just acquired a GTP-500 (original) in great cosmetic condition but the tuner is wonky. Dials in stations fine but output is low and doesnt increase with volume increase. Also gets tuner bleed through other inputs at low volume.
I was just going to start a thread on it asking for help as the gtp series preamp/tuners apparently suffer tuner issues as a common problem.
I hope I helped somewhat and that your not offended by my request for any help .FYI you can download the user manuals for each at adcom.com and see what improvements were made in the second edition.
