Adcom or Carver ?

Adcom's, like any other amp will pass DC someday. Without speaker protection, you will lose your drivers, PERIOD. Make sure you know this when considering one. BTW, I like how Adcom's sound but there are better sounding amps that have speaker relays so no reason to take chances.

Please drop a few. As long as they are under $600 I am really interested in your choices.

I personally wouldn't be scared of the Adcom (recapped), but maybe some of these as alternatives
Acurus A250, Parasound HCA-1500A, Bryston etc etc

i agree with donberry and the others about keeping the carver and getting a better than adcom preamp. its not that adcom is bad, its just not great.

if you can find an affordable tubed preamp you may achieve a better system than you imagined. an ARC sp6 or sp9 would be in my consideration but so might a jolida or eastern electric minimax, or conrad johnson.

check out audiogon.com and you may find something soon. there is a jolida now and there is always something new every few hours.

The m-400t sounds smoother than M-400. Initially I though there was something wrong. The t model sound s better with my Klipsch & the 400 sounds better on the Cerwin-Vega's.
