Hey guys, I was at a pawn shop and came across this pre amp for about $75. I know adcom makes good stuff but I don't know anything about this piece. It looked just like the one in the picture above so I'm assuming its that one. How much do these go for these days? It looks like it gets pretty good reviews so let me know your thoughts.

I also saw a pair of baby advent II's there for $25 that need a refoam job. Would these be worth picking up? Thanks for any help!

The Baby IIs would be mostly worth it if you can do the refoaming yourself...I recently paid about $70 to my local tech for refoaming a pair. That being said, they are not bad speakers, nice soundstage, good at low volumes, decent base to about 65db, the top end is where they fall down a bit. I use mine in my office system where I am mostly listening at a background level. They put out a decent volume, well paired with amps in the 25-55 wpc range.
 
If it is a 750 and in good shape, grab it. Their best pre amp ever and they still sell for hundreds.

And if it turns out to be a GFP-565 instead of a 750, that's still a hell of a deal.
 
I am a poor college student so I have to be careful about how much I spend sadly. I will be going back ASAP. I just had no idea what it was until I looked it up. It is possible it will be sold but I am in a tiny town so I don't think things like this go as fast here as they would in a larger city. I will be keeping my fingers crossed and I'll make a trip over there again tomorrow. Also saw an AMC DAC 8 and I have been thinking of adding a DAC to my system.
 
Try talking them down to 50 bucks. Tell them you're a poor college student but you love music.
 
I would absolutely grab that preamp as fast as you can! It can be the foundation for many systems in the future so it's worth getting now and hanging on to for years, plus you will likely never see a deal like that again.

I'd pass on the Advents, plenty of much better stuff out there - but please go get that preamplifier ASAP!
 
If it was really a 750, they sell for $700 - $800 all day long. I have lusted after one for some time but I just can't make myself pull the trigger. At $75, run and run quickly.
 
Alright, I went back this afternoon and the preamp was still there! I got it down to $70. Could have probably haggled more but I already felt like I was stealing it. From what I understand, this was from a professional DJ's rig so there are a few scuffs on the top edge of the unit, but the face is perfectly clean besides some tarnish on the brass plate and switches. A couple of the switches are a little rough and probably need to be looked at by me to see what I can do but everything looks and feels intact otherwise. I haven't played anything through it yet but this unit just looks so nice. It is very solidly built for sure and it is indeed a 750. I am torn. I want to hang on to it and get a nice power amp to go with it, but i also need money, so selling could be another option.
 
Clean it up. Check the Deoxit tutorial in General Audio a checklist of things to clean. Keep in mind people use different formulas. I prefer to use Deoxit D5 followed by Faderlube F5 on the pots. D5 on everything else. These formulas have flushing action you won't get from quick drying versions.

You can sell it, but consider when would you get an equivalent value/performing preamp and at what cost?

Do you have an amp you can test it with to see how well it works?
 
Those are my plans, thanks for the suggestions. I am pretty new to using deoxit but it will be worth it on this. That's exactly what I was thinking about when I got it. It is just such an amazing deal for what it is, and I would probably kick myself for letting it go. I think this will be a keeper. I will try and unload some of my lesser quality gear instead to make room and maybe make back a little money. I only have a receiver, no stand alone power amp. Could I just run the output from the pre-amp to a tape in on my receiver? or would this be bad? Probably a dumb question. I will have to keep an eye out for a nice power amp and phono pre-amp so I can hook up a nice turntable.

What they said! Run don't walk. The VERY BEST Pre-amp ever made by Adcom. Average resell price 650-750 today. And a Nelson Pass design. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah, a "freaking", "unbelievable", "unheard" of price ($75)...seriously!

You won't regret this purchase!

Yep! See my posts above, I was lucky enough to get it and I even got the guy to knock the price down $5. It needs a little cleaning and some TLC on a switch or 2 (more than deoxit) but I am quite excited to have found something this high end for so little. I cant wait until I can put it in a nice system.

Agreed. The 750 is in a class by itself. After that. The 715 is very good and then things decline pretty quickly.

The 710 is OK.
