Adcom/Yamaha Compatibility

All right Yamaha aficionados,here's a head scratcher for you:I hooked up a C-2a preamp to an Adcom GFA-5800 and got what sounded like a home alarm going off.

Posted on this thread for some advice concerning the 2.5VAC readings I was getting from the pre outs.

Hooked this preamp to a Yamaha M-60 and it works fine.Is Yamaha completely incompatible with Adcom amps or what?

No normal reason for the pairing of the Adcom and Yamaha to inherently result in the noise you heard. Something wrong with one or the other.

If preamp works with M-60... You might want to try Adcom with any other preamp or directly with iPod or similar. Just be careful with the volume.

Would using lower grade interconnect cables make a difference?I'm using some higher grade Monster cables to connect the amp to the original preamp and used some basic AR interconnects to test the C-2a..

I'll try the Monsters when I get back from work.

unplug everything from each other and make voltage measurements on all inputs and outputs. you could have a grounding issue.

More than likely a bad interconnect cable..

Alright,found the wall socket was a three wire and the actual house wiring on that side of the room to be two wire.Preamps are working with the Adcom now.Apparently the Luxman has a circuitry that allows it to work with the Adcom in a two wire ungrounded configuration where the Yamaha will not..

The best sound I have ever had the pleasure to experience, while occupying space in my own home, was with the following system, circa 1986:

Kyocera turntable with a Signet moving coil cartridge (before the Audio Technica convergence) ; Yamaha C-85 preamplifier (which made it possible to connect a separate stereo power amplifier to each speaker) ; Two Adcom GFA-555 power amplifiers; and Phase Technology PC-1000 Floor standing speakers.

The C-85, with its quiet and well balanced phono section; and the GFA 555s, with their abundant supply of current, proved to be more than able to make those 4 ohm speakers sing; the sound was just simply outstanding; the likes of which I have yet to even come close to experiencing since then.

Therefore from my all too brief encounter with the above set-up, imho, Yamaha Preamplifier + Adcom Power Amplifier = :tresbon:

After a comparison between the C-2a and the C-85,I decided to keep the C-85.I'm also running 4 ohm speakers.

Interesting that the C-2a is selling on ebay for 2-3 times more than the C-85.I got $300 for it!
