Okay let me start out by saying I am no audio file so don't laugh at me.. I have the above pair of speakers. They definitely sound great but are on the bass heavy 'darker' sound and I was wondering about adding a second pair of smaller speakers to flesh out the high and mid-range.
Would it make any sense to buy an older pair of atoms or PSB Alpha A or b's and use them as well with the 9se mkII's??

Welcome to AK!

First thing I would do is check the caps in the crossover. If the original caps are still there, replace them with metallized poly film caps. Use the same uF capacitance values. The voltage rating does not matter as long as the new caps are rated for the same or greater voltage.

I have numerous Paradigms (3se, 5se, Titans, Monitor 9 V1). After recapping, they sounded much better, Even the Monitors sounded better after recapping, and I bought them new in 2000.

Interesting..the job sounds way above my pay grade though. Maybe something to try after another project is done. I have found that I'm not as impressed with the sound as I once was; that might have more to do with your other response to my post though, I now live in a very small place and am unable to have the speakers back onto a wall. I have the "golden triangle " with speakers roughly7' apart and angled toward me in the middle 7' from each, more or less.
They are driven by a Rotel Rx 1052

I had 5se, 9se mk II and 11se mk II. I experienced the same characteristics as you from the 9's and 11's...which use a different tweeter than the first generation 5se. That speaker used a Vifa tweeter that was really nice...and I enjoyed the voicing of the 5se quite a lot. The 9's and 11's were too tilted toward the bottom end...which might work well in an acoustically reflective room, but otherwise just too lacing in detail and sparkle on the top end for my preferences. If you go stacking speakers to try and get some more high end presence, you'll introduce some undesirable acoustic anomalies like comb filtering and you could also stress the amp (depending on the speakers you pair up with the mains). You're likely best off replacing the 9se's.
