Adding a Center Speaker to a Marantz 2270. What options do I have?

Hello everyone,

My situation is as follows:

Setup: Wiim Amp (in use as streamer) with ARC connected to TCL with apple tv. > DAC topping E30 > Marantz 2270 > Duevel Planets omnidirectional floor standing speakers.

I have a rectangular shaped listening / Movie room which is around 300 Sq/ft. I have the speakers in the middle of the room on each side, however the tv is at the end of that room and I have connected the tv via ARC to the Wiim streamer. The tv sound doesn't sound like the sound originated from the tv so I want to add something to distribute the sound better when watching a movie on the tv.
I know that the 2270 has an A+B setting but the speakers that I use are 4 ohms and hooking up another pair and running them all together will probably not be the best idea. I really like the speakers I am currently using and I don't want to change them.

My question is if there is a simple way to add a center channel or a B channel without taxing the 2270 too much? Maybe via a switch / splitter device?

You could add resistors in series with your main speakers to raise their impedance so that you can run two sets of speakers in parallel.
 
Or get a speaker selector box with impedance protection. Ideally one which uses autoformers rather than resistors to keep impact on sound quality to a minimum.
 
The problem with what you are wanting to do is the 2270 outputs no center channel information. There may be someway to use the Speaker B outputs and combine those into a single channel to feed a center speaker, but I don't know what that is. I'd be looking for a powered soundbar that can be driven from your TCL TV using an HDMI connection. One issue that might arise from doing that though is audio synchronization between the soundbar and Left/Right main speakers. I ran into that trying to do exactly what you are trying to do and finally just gave up. Only difference is I was trying to use the built in TV speaker as the center channel.
 
Many thanks for the replies. I think this is more complicated than I thought! Will probably just get a second set of speakers and connect those to the B channel and just switch. (any excuse to get more speakers, right? )

It would depend on the speaker being able to sum the input of both channels. One could loop the pre out back to the main in with 'Y' connectors. A simple summing network of a couple resistors connected to the output of the receiver would accomplish the same thing for a mono input powered speaker, use the input control, sensitiviy, of the speaker to match the speakers output to the other speakers, the receivers volume control would control everything. The value of the summing resistors would be sufficiently high not to affect the receiver, very high resistance compared to the speakers. Powered subwoofers have this arrangement. Ebay, someone, probably sells such a thing for just a few dollars.
 
To those who were following and / or thinking of doing the same. I finally got it working with a set of powered speakers and splitting the the pre out to main in signal.
