Adding inputs with passive pre

reyneman

Requiescat in pace
I have an integrated with only one input.

Now, I could continue to plug/unplug the RCAs, but I have a passive pre that I would like to use.

This pre uses an ALPs attenuator and top line components, has three inputs.

My question- on the whole, would it be better to run the pre at full volume and use the volume control on the integrated, or run the integrated wide open and use the volume control on the pre?

Am not ready AT THIS TIME to bypass the volume control on the amp, though that will be a future consideration.

Controd the volume

Try it both ways and see which sounds best.

The answer to your question may depend more on which volume control tracks better and the quality of the volume controls.

I would start by using the volume control on the amplifier because any noise picked up on the leads between the passive preamp and the integrated amp would be attenuated before it reaches the amplifier.

It would be best to turn the volume on the passive preamp to max and use the volume on the intergrated. This way you avoid noise, hum etc.

Not sure if it helps but I keep the Gain cranked on my amp and use the Volume on the preamp only.

I have been varying the gain control on my amps, just to get into some 'new' territory in the control on the preamps.

Thanks for all the replys. Seems there's no real consensus. Guess I'll just play around.

Dang, such drudgery:p:

That's what I really miss from the 'classic 70s"- all those buttons and knobs to play with! This modern crap I have has zilch- zero- nada. Volume and selector, how do you play with them:dunno:
