Adding IR Remote Volume Control.

Ok here I go with something else to add noise to my system.

Anyway, I’m looking to control the volume on my vintage Fisher RS-Z1 receiver utilizing the adapter in/out RCA jacks on back of receiver. I usually listen to most of my music in Direct mode, bypassing all tone controls and filters. Ocassionally I may want to listen to my MASTERS playlist on Tidal without having to jump up and turn down the volume because the level suddenly went up 6dB. I’m unable to control the volume via PC because it disables Tidal’s MQA signal sent to my Meridian Explorer2 DAC.

I don’t want to invest $$$$ in a passive preamp. I’m Basically looking for a clean sounding line level potentiometer with a motor and remote.
I found this thing that comes with a small IR remote control and seems promising but usually non-audiophile quality for $ 75.00.
it has tubes, that’s gotta be a plus?

Anything remotely similar ships from China in a month for $129 but looks substantial.


Any advice welcome, I’m trying to stay under $100 budget.

The easiest way would just buy a Fisher RS-Z1 remote control or something compatible, but I’ve had no luck there either.

Anything has to be better than this!

Buy a universal remote. Start with the Sanyo/Fisher codes and have it auto-step until the unit responds. Easy.

The motorized volume is onboard- it's foolish to consider any other option.

I really wish it was that easy. I have gone through over a dozen universal remotes and none worked for this particular Fisher. I don’t know what could be so different about this particular receiver that no universal remotes work.

But I didn’t try the Sanyo codes!!!

It was made for Sanyo, so it's highly likely the codes will be Sanyo proprietary ones.

If you can't get any IR remote to work, you could go down this track:

Just cut off the part of the above board with the pot on it and wire the motor drive directly to your existing motorised volume pot in the Fisher. The IR receiver could be remote mounted and a suitable power supply line in the receiver could run this board. All reversible if you ever find the right remote down the track.

You’re a savior. I’ve been searching for four months for a compatible remote for my Fisher RS-Z1! The Logitech Harmony 650 remote controls EVERYTHING! The volume adjustment is better than manually adjusting and I can now do it from the sweet spot!
