One advantage to speaker level outs is that matched phase relationships will be maintained between the sub and mains which isn't necessarily the case with pre-outs ..
You can swap the wires to the main speakers to check/correct.

Just in case there remains any unclarity, here's a rendering showing a sub that has both line (low) level inputs/outputs and speaker (high) level inputs.
Some subs may also have speaker level outputs too but most often those are simply convenience pass through connections, I.E. same signal comes from those as goes to the speaker level inputs.
