Adding volume remote to vintage gear

I have yet to find a new audio taper motorized pot. As I said, I have one in a parts unit that will likely do just fine, but I'd love to find a source so I could put together a parts list for anyone wanting to do this from scratch. I'm sure it's out there, I just haven't found it yet.

Anyone know about modifying a X-10 light switch to control volume on the dimmer function? Saw a mention of this in Home Automation Lab catalog years
ago but never ordered the brochure($5.00)
 
I do not see why you would have to modify the existing control. Set up remote controled trimmer pots of some sort, and wire them in series with the existing volume control. Set the base level with the volume control, and vary it with the remote controlled trimmer.

If one just wanted to be able to knock the volume down remotely, like when answering the phone or something, I can envision just a couple of resistors wired as above with a remote controlled relay to cut them in or out of the circuit. That should be a fairly simple add in.

Put the system next to your chair and run wires to the speakers across the room. That is what I did, see avatar.

I was thinking the Velleman kit might be enough, but then I started to think it might be nice to have a knob to walk up to and spin when needed.

This remote control unit became motorized developed originally the retrofitting of HiFi units (without remote control) with ALPS Drehpotentiometern. Also Motorpotentiometer of other manufacturers can be used however as far as the demanded tensions are kept and currents.

The Set consists of: A remote control giver, an infrared receiver eye as well as the tax platinums for the connection of 1 Motorpotentiometer. Two sentences cable with connector for the Betriebsspannungsanschluss and the connection to the motor are enclosed.

A Motorpotentiometer does not belong to the delivery.

The necessary Betriebsspannung amounts to can stabilized use + 7V until + 20V (250mA) unstabilisiert, the skilled expert however also one tension of + 5V whereby he simply bridges the 5V-Spannungsregler on the platinums.

The remote control giver works with the RC05-Code, whereby for the business of the Motorpotis only 2 keys, for which right course are belaid and the to the left course.

Mi sugestion is to keep the original pot or if you want to change for a good one with motor.

If you want to keep the original Pot you can use an simple dc motor with reduce gear acuppled to the main axis of the Potenciometer and with an mv500 an Mv 601 and off couse Ir emitter an receiver an four transisitor H bridge you can move the pot to one way or other. You can use more apliance of this Ic like change the source, disconect the speaker mutting or else.

If you need an schematic to do I can given to you with some modifications regarding your aplication.

To make it easier, make a wired remote and use a battery in a box with two buttons to control the stepper based potentiometer.

One button for right turn(up) and one turn for left(down) Each reverses the polarity.

It would only need 2 wires, so some thin lamp wire would work well.
This requires little skill and would be a quick build over more complex designs using transisors, diodes and such with IR LEDs.

To make it even cool, just double side tape a small stepper motor on top of the unit that has a pulley on it and run a belt to the volume control, that way, you dont have to open the unit and the control system would be removable if you wanted to sell or keep it original.

Henry, I think a Concept 16.5 would be a prime candidate for my procedure. You may think about giving it a try.

I'd do it for my sx-1250, but I don't mind getting up to turn the volume. I like the feel of a non-remote receiver myself.
 
Idea!!

I was just thinking--maybe, buy the replacement pot w/ motor, take an old remote control car, remove the insides of the car, stick them inside the receiver, only using the motor that came with the pot. Then, take an old silver VCR remote or somthing, remove the guts, and put the insides of the car remote in there, rigging up a way to use two of the old VCR buttons to push the controls that make the motor go back and forth.

Also, as i said earlier, I could also leave the old pot and drill a hole down the middle of the shaft, where few step-down gears from the R.C.C. motor would run another pin(so it goes slower) that drives the pot.

Ya dont want to fool with RF, you might end up loosing your speakers if someone was playing with a remote car with the same frequency..lol

Well, I kinda lost control and ordered an Alps stereo pot from a seller in Germany using a well-known on-line auction site.

Of course then the very polite seller emailed and asked what resistance values I desired. Oops. I have a very fuzzy notion of building an outboard box that includes this pot and a mute circuit (both infrared controllable). My notion was to either insert them in the pre-out/main-in box path or *maybe* put them in line with existing volume control. The former seems like less work.

What I have no clue about is what resistance values I would want in either application or if there is something like an associated taper that would be best.

Any advice out there on AK? From people (unlike this impulse buyer!) who have a clue?

Over 20 years ago AR, the AR, made a product called the ARC. It was a little BPC box with IR remote and a few RCA I/O's on it. You connected it to the tape or EQ loop on a receiver and Viola!, remote control and source selection for anything plugged directly into it. I have one and it works great.

The only downside is AR used a lame opamp and it does not sound very good in stock form. I swapped it out for a better spec unit but the one they used was not pin for pin compatible so I had to make little jumpers. However after the swap it performed wonderfully. I then had the intuitive jump that what this thing was, was a preamp (Duh!) and for a time it, my Dynaco ST70, ADS CD3 and a set of ADS B8's was my entire system.

If you watch eBay, once in awhile they show up and never go for very much when they do as no one seems to remember them.

I found a kit that does exactly that:
- IR standard remote codes. (PIC driven)
- outputs of receiver are ready to drive an ALPS motorized volume pot.

The kit is 30 euros available from Selectronic.
They also have two ALPS pots (motorized):
1) The extra silent pot is 50 euros.
2) The standard one is 30 euros.

The receiver requires 12VDC @ 100mA.
The pot requires 6VDC @ 100mA.
I think they ship worldwide.
 
How about this as a viable solution. Take the remote pot and circuitry out of you Sony donor unit and build a small box for it. Place it in front of your Vintage unit and use a TT belt to connect the shaft of the Sony pot to the knob of the Vintage unit. Might be a crude way but could get the job done with not internal damage to the vintage gear.

If I had the Donor unit and know how, I would try it on a G 9000 because they have the gadget behind the volume knob that stops it from going too high when pre set to the max you want it to go.

Just a thought to avoid making any real internal changes to nice vintage units.

Cool Idea, I was thinking the same thing. The hard part would be aligning the pully with the knob so the belt doesn't ride off it every time it rotates.
