Adjusting Midrange - using Loudness Dial on Yamaha amp?

Is this a logical way of adjusting the mid-band? Maybe my understanding of the loudness control is wrong, but wanted to ask here since it seems like what i'd like to do to compensate between turntable stylus'.

The variable loudness control is intended to be used as the day-to-day working volume control after you have set the max volume using the volume control part.

The point of that is so the loudness compensation is more correct at any given volume than simple on/off loudness compensation.

But, there is nothing stopping you from using it however you see fit if it gets the job done for you.
 
I know this thread is a little dated, While the variable loudness is not intended for this purpose, it works great as a midrange control when used lightly. It attenuates frequencies with a gentle curve centered at 1KHz. My Elac UB5s can be a bit poky the 1-2Khz range. If I turn down the variable loudness to around -3 to -6dB they smooth out.
