aDs 1230 swap?

I have a friend who has a pair of aDs 1230's he's had since new (37 years). He says one woofer in each cabinet has ceased to function and he wants to downsize to a smaller speaker (moved to a new smaller house as well). He's started talking crazy talk about sawing off the bottoms of the cabinets to get rid of one of the woofers in each!!!!! I'm trying to convince him to see if he can find someone who would swap for a pair of L710's or L810's - he might even accept a good pair of L520's or something similar. he's in the Baltimore/DC/VA area. Not an AK member. Anyone can help out and see if we can rescue the 1230's from the circular saw????

The guy's obviously a true "audiophile". If the aspiring butcher posted a thread here asking for advice on how to accomplish the chop-job, the initial response would be one of horror, and rightfully so. Eventually, the thread would invariably devolve to posters thinking out loud (in print) about how best to accomplish the "modification."
My advice to RufusX would be to wait for the guy to leave his house for awhile and break in to steal the 1230's, leaving these behind.

I can't believe he would even consider that as an option!
Smack him to bring him to his senses!
Maybe you should grab the 1230's????
 
People do crazy things. I know a guy who cut one off of the posts on a nice antique fourposter bed so the ceiling fan wouldn't hit it.
 
Usually when someone proposes a mod like that whether it be cars, guns, or audio I'd call them "Sport" or "Commodore" when replying.

With one woofer on the crossover it no longer works as designed as the impedance is doubled. You also lose 3dB in bass output further imbalancing the sound.
 
rufusx, Is your objective to obtain the ADS 1230s for yourself ? If so, why don't you just offer to buy him a smaller pair of ADS's in trade for the 1230s.... that way everyone's happy, right ? I have a pretty nice pair of L520s I'd trade him in a flash if I were closer.........Dan :music:
