Too bad I laready have 2 pairs...wait a minute - there is still a room without a 1290 in the house.
In all seriousness - these are 1290/2 on top of it. If in good shape this is a great deal.

I was actually close by today. I called approximately 25 minutes after they were listed, and got what was probably the guys son...he wasn't home. I wasn't so serious about them so I didn't pursue. I did send an enail and haven't heard back...

are these really THAT good?

Yes they are - at least to my ears and for a bunch of other AK-ers I believe.

I'll second that.

I have owned ADS products since the late seventies and they have always been one of my favorite speaker manufacturers.

I paid $1100 + tax for the last pair I bought and never regretted it.

The 1290/2 listed on CL would be an absolute bargain for someone if they are in good condition.

Personally, I can't imagine anyone not liking them but if they didn't, they could always recoup their money.

yep, they are great speakers. I never heard them before and learned about them at AK.
I took the plunge with a nice pair of 570 and never looked back. Now I have a pair of 980, 1530, 570, 1290 (X2) and would not refuse to get a nice 1230 and/or 990...someone should be driving to Long Island by now.

they are long gone

I talked to the seller today. Really nice guy. He told me that he listed them while he was at work and his wife called him from home saying someone was interested so fast his head spun....possibly within minutes. The buyer than proceeded to call about 10 times until the seller got home. Additionally, this was the buyers second pair. This listing came on at 10:40 a.m. on the Saturday morning of Thanksgiving weekend. Incidentally, there was another pair of what looked like 1290s (certainly tower ADS at least) recently listed on LI CList for $50 which I was not late on inquiring about and never heard back...

Like I have said before, about 1 1/2 years ago, I was confident as a buyer if I caught a listing within a 24 hour period. Now, I'm not very comfortable with 15 minutes.

So what does this tell us?

1. Someone was in exactly the right place at exactly the right time

or

2. CList is so inundated with people like us that there is someone to snag a score as soon as it is listed at any time, so we have effectively screwed ourselves out of standing any reasonable chance at getting a good deal

what do you think?

#2 for most part. I have this happened to me with several pairs of Advents, BA-150, DQ 10, Cornwalls, etc.
However, sometimes things are not sold and people do not show up and persistence pays off. That is how I finally got 2 pairs of Advents and BA-150, ADS, TF and so on.

You win some, lose some. And then you start selling and getting new stuff...
